Help with accident

The MIL had an accident where a car went into the back of hers.
She has had a letter from a 'Accident Management company' saying that they are coming to collect her car, that it is deemed a total loss and they will take it away for an agreed sum. She hasn't agreed to anything on the telephone or otherwise and she is quite distressed. The bloody car hasn't even been assessed by a garage.
Has anyone heard of this before? I have told her the obvious, to speak to her insurance company etc.
