on tyre ratings ..if a tyre has greater roll resistance = worse mpg ...does this mean that tyre will have more grip...?

Not necessarily, rolling resistance and grip are not intrinsically linked. It would be quite possible to design a tyre with appalling grip and high rolling resistance.
