RE: Caterham AeroSeven Concept
Discussion
Oh my god, that is so wrong. I just hope Caterham are reading this & they put their hands & "Don't worry folks,it was just a joke, we quite liked some of the ideas on here & we will be following these up for a production version.

I cannot believe I have just skimmed through 8 pages of comments critisising the appearance of this car.
The current model has gone as far as it can with the bodyshell it has. Competitors using a similar philosophy, but using modern aero are leaving it behind.
Caterham must change the body to keep up, and this gives them the chance to incorporate some modern tech at the same time.
The looks are way down on the list of priorities, as they should be in a car of this type.
There are a lot of clever people on PH forums and I do not like to critisise, but on this occasion I think everybody is missing the point entirely.

You're the designer aren't you?The current model has gone as far as it can with the bodyshell it has. Competitors using a similar philosophy, but using modern aero are leaving it behind.

Actually, that can't be as you appear literate and intelligent and whoever was sitting at the CAD station on their lunch break from licking envelopes clearly wouldn't be.
I don't think any of us are missing the point, I think you are. Where did you get the idea that looks are way down on the list of priorities? They should follow function for this sort of car, yes, as they did with the original Seven. There is no reason why this car needs to be so hideously ugly, it seems almost deliberately foul in proportion and styling. Everyone was expecting an updated Seven but what does this bring to the party? A slipperier body shape whilst being more impractical and completely undesirable. Any half talented designer could do a sterling job of creating a modern Seven that would take the fight to the new upstarts and be a seriously handsome and desirable car. It's a dream brief, a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'll bet there are hundreds of designers out there right now who despaired when they saw this. What a fking waste.

Go drive an R500 and tell us exactly who they need to 'keep up' with. What 'modern tech' should they incorporate?
Even if they do need to move to a full body there is simply no excuse for the fvcking abysmal design here. Seriously you could go to any industrial design or art college with this brief and get hundreds of great concepts done for free. So the 'problem' is questionable and the the 'solution' is wrong. The 21 was a beautiful design that was a commercial failure. Exactly how many of these things do Caterham think they can sell? I'm not sure how we are missing the point.

Of course not.
Trouble is most of the comments are coming from people who haven't owned a se7en, which is obviously just bought for its fantastic looks
I suspect most of the comments are coming from people with working eyes. It's simply ugly. Other manufacturers have been able to produce quite attractive full bodied 7 clones, so it's surprising that Caterham have managed to make such a fist of this.Trouble is most of the comments are coming from people who haven't owned a se7en, which is obviously just bought for its fantastic looks

It's not bad. kinda big though.
Thanks for that. It doesn't look quite as bad in a video. It's not bad. kinda big though.
The cross member is silly though. You'd absolutely have to wear a helmet in this car as smacking your face against that wouldn't be very pleasant, which would happen a lot I imagine.
Does anyone know whatever happened to this? Just been rewatching the Top Gear episode it featured in (alongside the 620R and 160). Didn't care for the looks much - yes, the Seven is a dinosaur, but its crucial quality is that it looks friendly. A slot-eyed cyborg was not the solution to the problem. Dare I suggest they look to the Frog-Eye Sprite for inspiration if they want to give Ginetta, or even Mazda, an interesting rival?
