Surely the 720s reigns supreme in sandbagging, supposed to be 720bhp but on the dyno some are making around 800 which explains the unbelievable performance. Have you seen what Dragtimes has done to many supercars in his including the Dodge Demon and his isn’t anywhere near the fastest standard car.

Anyway my submission is the surprising, bland Astra 1.6 turbo that can do 0-60 in 6.5’s but looks any other Astra.

I have one of these. As I’m in Australia it’s called the Holden Astra RS-V here but I think it’s Sri 200 in UK?

It is surprisingly quick and I was pleasantly happy when I first drove it.

It does struggle for grip in 1st on take off but good after that.

It is definitely sub 7 to 60mph and I’m not that gentle and it returns 38mpg.

Stacked with kit as well and surprised it’s not more popular.

I’m not. The people who buy these hatchbacks only care about the badge. They would rather have a 10 second 0-60 a class for an extra £50 a month.

Although I agree with you in the surprisingly quick, even the 1.4 turbo Astra seems to be quicker than anything the focus offers. Excluding the actual st.

Giggling stupidly when test driving a Fabia VRS back in 2005, that much torque in a small car was hilarious, bought one on the spot and I loved every minute I owned that car.

My daily a Pro’ceed GT has a good turn of speed not rocket ship fast but quicker than I thought it would be.
The 1.9 PD did feel far quicker than they were. Properly throw you back in your seat stuff despite not actually moving that quickly. Buzz are really.
All to do with the lumpy delivery. Had various PDs and CRs and the older engine had a far greater surge when the boost built...for about 1,000 rpm anyway. The CR had more grunt off-boost and held the power to near the red line, giving another 1,000-1,500 or useful thrust, where the PD was all done and fading by 3,000 so never had the same 'elastic-band' feeling as the PD.

Against the stopwatch through the gears the equivalent CR would always be quicker, but in the right gear for a short blast of overtaking etc., the PD would inevitably feel faster.

Similar to the PSA DTurbo and HDI, the older ones felt much quicker

At least 50% of this thread is full of posters who clearly seem to miss the point entirely. A McLaren, surprisingly fast? Yeah, righto hehe

I’m assuming your referencing my comment? If so you’ve taken my post out of context.

My wife has one of those BMW Active Tourer MPV thingys (she likes it). Of course I convinced her to be environmentally friendly and get the 225XE hybrid.

Excellent traction off the line with petrol on the front wheels and electric on the rears. In the traffic line GP there is not many things that will touch it to 30,so around town it's a blast. Doesn't handle too bad either. Pity the wife drives it like a nun.
I believe this is essentially a mini countryman phev or vice versa.

Having driven the countryman phev I can wholeheartedly agree that it's a quick car. Extraordinary grip as well, genuinely as fun as my old puma around the twisties. Excellent auto gearbox too. Electric range isn't great though but adequate for small trips to town.

I have the 1.6dci Qashqai, £30 a year road tax, now that gets down the road surprisingly well and on a b road rowing the box along it is scorchingly quick probably quicker than my E39 530d all through the rev range...not bad for something that is essentially a moms wagon. I also have a 306GTI6 whilst not the quickest is searingly quick point to point especially on the B roads where size, in gear acceleration and apex speeds count, its a right riot, always pushing and obliterating more powerful cars and people expressions are amazing when it flys past....1200kgs and a close ratio box and a zingy responsive NA engine means it feels like a race car when pressing on.

One car that still now, when I floor it from a standing start, makes me laugh is a Bentayga..... you know it’s going to be quick as it has 600 bhp but it still feels quicker than you expect.!!

Lets look see how quick it is on the 0-60 sprint.

1.6dci Qashqai 9.6-10.7s
E39 530d 7.7s

Yeah, sorry but no. The Cashcow is not in any way quick. I mean it's acceptable but ~10s to 60 isn't going to trouble anything than quicker than a bottom of the range 5-series and you might get pipped in the TLGP by an octogenarian in their Honda Jazz. rofl

We've all heard colleagues talking about their new and very humdrum car and use terms like "pulls like a train" and "goes like a rocket" when it's a 10+ sec to 60 car. Or something middlingly brisk that they think is an absolute world destroying wild stallion, like a 3 litre Subaru.

It's all about perspective and perception I suppose; compared to the wheezing four cylinder NASP engines that used to be the norm in ordinary cars anything with a turbo is going to at least feel fast, even when it's not. Modern cars with decent autos also have the capability to use their peak power a lot of the time, they make the most of their 180bhp or so at legal speeds.

It depends what you are used to - my 2 litre diesel C-Max seems quite brisk, until I drive it just after driving my Ferrari 456 - then it feels very slow.

Agree and just look at how many posts you will read on here that describe the 320d as a fast car. I found my 520d hateful in terms of performance but that is only because I've had quicker cars. For most they will feel quick though for sure I think.
