A family member is deciding between a new 911 Turbo and Bentley GT V8, so we spent some time over a drink on the websites building ideal cars.

Anyway, it turns out that with the new Porsche you can have... drum roll please... leather airvents. Leather airvents! Airvents, trimmed in leather!! For £801!!!

Ignore the price for a moment, it's no doubt petty cash for those who can afford the car, but who in the hell thinks "yeah, nice car, but those airvents, I'm not sold - could you trim them in leather?"

OK, the launch car for the motorshows probably had every possible option bolted and stitched on, but I can't see why anyone actually wanting this throughout the production run.

So my evening challenge to you - find and report back ridiculously pointless and ludicrously priced options you are convinced nobody would ever actually tick the box for!

Me. I absolutely love that sort of crap. I wouldnt spec them because I couldn't get over the £801 cost but if they were considerably cheaper or available as part of some sort of 'cover the entire dash and everything in leather' option pack I'd definately go for that. Extended leather dashboards are awesome.

I see your point - but this was not covered in a pack. It was a standalone 'exclusive' item!

Auto parking things - do it yourself.
Lane departure warning - don't use your mobile.
Approaching vehicle warning - look in your mirrors.
Hill hold - use your clutch properly.

This st encourages bad driving.

I'm thinking options available that if anyone actually ticked the box, the paperwork would travel around with the entire organisation scratching their heads, thinking 'wtf order code is "lea/av50934B"?' whilst sending office juniors down into the basement to dig out the original archived sign off and launch materials smile

ABS, traction control, servo assisted brakes, power steering, self cancelling indicators....[/ph mode]

In all seriousness, if given the choice I wouldn't spec things like auto wipers, lights etc.

I picked maroon and silver leather seats on my old Fiesta at a cost of £850 boxedin

They did a lower-spec limited edition with it as standard, but mine was the only one I've seen with it as an optional extra.

I always think people that press that button to close their boot on a big fk-off audi like a q7 look stupid. Is that an option? Why not just, err, shut the boot?

I remember looking at the Aston DB spec in the 1990s, and coat hooks were a £600 option.

Actually, Porsche seem to be the master at this sort of thing - seriously?

Leather Fuse box cover £ 178.00
Headlight cleaning system covers painted in deviating exterior colour £ 138.00
Alcantara belt outlet trims finish in colour of B-/C-pillar £ 259.00

Nobody has ever ticked these boxes. Ever. hehe

Panoramic roof with "magic sky" on the wife's new SLK. Even the dealer told us not to spectre "magic sky" bit as it doesn't really go that dark!!!
We still took the panoramic roof just not the dimming glass at the touch of a button! Saved £750 I think!
ETA just checked spec and price list £1995 for magic roof!!!

I actually find this very useful, as my commute has several places where I am in crawling traffic on inclines.

That's got to be the very definition of something that sounds dreadful but is actually terrific. Well chosen!

This thread is a good excuse for playing configurators...

I will come back and produce my findings.
