RE: Mitsubishi Evo X FQ 330 SST: Spotted

The trouble with these later Evos and Imprezas was that they were trying to be all things to all men, instead of sticking to what they knew best. I still think the Evo 6 TME and Impreza P1 are their respective pinnacles.
^^^^ Spot on, still to be bested. Everything released since by either got progressively worse IMO. Instead of trying to compete with the Germans on better interior plastics and failing, they should have stuck to what made them uniquely desirable in the first place. Bang for buck, raw performance and relatively light weight. Not everyone wants 16 way adjustable electric seats and a "performance car" which weighs 2 tonnes. All they needed to do was improve their mpg\co2 emissions and keep them relatively affordable compared to their German rivals to still be relevant in todays market.

My one major issue I have with Evos is I haven't heard a single one that sounds good. They just sound like overgrown, lower-revving, sport bike engines and are usually equipped with those Folger's Coffee fart cans, which makes them sound even worse.
By comparison, the Subarus have a lovely sound, almost like a V8 at times.
So, I don't think I could have either since it's a choice of good looks and crap sound, or lovely sound and crap looks.
You can't have heard one running decent boost with a decent exhaust giving it some stick then! My 370hp Evo VI with magnex exhaust 3" turbo back sounded awesome. Personal taste though I guess...By comparison, the Subarus have a lovely sound, almost like a V8 at times.

Last year I had an Impreza GB270 Wagon for a while with some no name exhaust and the sound gave me the HORN!

In this regard the Impreza always had the Evo licked sounding almost V8 like with it's rumble.

But then i had come from a 944 Turbo that didn't really sound of anything. And i will admit that i went from the Evo to a 400bhp 300zx Twin Turbo and was happy with the (in comparison)silent 'turbine' noise it made.

Worst car I've ever had, this year alone it whent on the back of a low loader back to the dealer 4 times. Interior was rubbish, hammered fuel and sounded like a dyson. I should never have got rid of my ur quattro was more fun, sounded better and looked better. Mitsubushi are also awful to deal with.
TBF the fact that the interior is low rent, it likes a drink, doesn't make a great sound and the dealers are terrible are all well known and completely misses the point of these cars. Captainawesome said:
From personal experience of driving an Evo 7 and a modded R32 GTR back to back they are completely different cars. I bought the Evo as it felt like a ballet dancer compared to the Skyline. Was gutted to be honest as I had always loved Skylines and wanted to love it but it just felt huge and slow compared to the Evo.
I would have an Evo every time. I own an FQ 360 but it is a weekend car. The rate at which the fuel gauge drops (not helped by the tiny tank) is just bloody terrifying. I am usually at the pumps twice in a day when hooning it. Couldn't live with that day to day, and my daily is 475bhp and much better on fuel.
I'd agree when talking about the R32, much more about straight line speed and there is a vast difference in age and technology between the R32 and the Evo 7. My R32 was a wonderful thing and I loved it to bits but it was not a nimble thing compared to a rally bred car and wasn't designed to be. When I was looking at Evos I was in an R33 which is much closer to the Evo 5/6 experience but still a very different car built to do different things, lets face it touring car background vs rally car are 2 platforms built for different disciplines. I still cannot get over the fact an BR26DETT was more economical even with hybrid turbos and the boost at 14psi.
Still, fantastic cars and the Evo and Supra will be 2 things on my car list I will probably always regret not buying. Much as I'd love to have one or both on the driveway other priorities have taken over these days adn I'm only just hanging onto the 911!
I owned exactly this model and colour for about a year.
The SST in sport (or super sport) auto was fantastic as an A-B missile, always keeping you on song. There is very little that would be able to stay with or get away from one around fast A/B roads.
You won't get 26mpg out of it, other than a long motorway journey at 56mph.
The interior was a bit ropey and rattly, but well equipped.
However duelling as a road racer (or is that ricer ;-) when the hooligan comes out in you, and a family hauler four door practical saloon, for a reasonable price I was delighted with it.
The soundtrack was a bit muted and the car felt FQ (you know what that stands for) rather than being a particularly fast car, if that makes sense.
Mine was very reliable.
Traded up into a GTR to get my next fix, but I do miss the practicality of the super saloon aspect of the Evo.

I'm one of the loons that runs an Evo X as my daily driver, doing 30k per year Both my X's have been the 5 speed manual, and have returned 22-23mpg average - the SST should return better with a longer 6th speed. Definitely not up to german build quality standards, but a lot better than earlier model Evo's or Impreza's. Some owners have had numerous problems, but both mine have been pretty reliable, with only minor niggles resolved under warranty.
The only problem I've had, as with most owners, is the urge to tinker and upgrade - coilover suspension, bigger brakes, wider tyres, etc. and then add some trackday expenditure as well
