I bought a superb Porsche 944 recently and it is like a time warp machine being almost perfect...............however about once every 100 starts, it does not fire or make any attempt to go and due to that, its a worry you might get stranded.
I suspected the imobiliser and traced the wires to a horrific sight!
All the wires were not soldered or even Scotch blocked, they were all just wrapped and taped up, perfect if you want fires and unreliability, I just find it hard to believe the stupidity of some people. I soldered and shrink wrapped all joints and it started and ran like clockwork.
We shall see after 100 starts if I have solved the problem.

What is the worst bodge you have done or seen?

If your fix on the 944 doesn't work change the DME relay for a brand new one - it could be starting to fail.

And bodge wise a previous 'restorer' had used filler to 'stick' clean metal over the rust on a Mini I bought. I'm just glad I knew about it before I bought it!

Worst dodge ever seen was on a Mini 1275GT with an MOT in 1986. Looking around and noticed that a brake hose to one of the front drums was perished and had been isolated upstream of the rupture with a pair of mole grips clamped onto the hose!!!

Looked at a Mini Cooper S hack in late 1960's when they were really not collectible. Gearbox had been changed and the engine mounts replaced with wooden (pine) blocks screwed in place with ordinary woodscrews. The engine literally could have fallen out at anytime. Declined a test drive and walked away. I understand the owner did sell the car,but not for much cash it was a genuine Cooper S 1071 I think. Worst bodge I have still seen in 50 years of motoring.

A thrust washer sawn in half and chiseled between axle and stub to take the play out of a worn kingpin.

Went to view a MK1 Mondeo quite a few years back with the airbag sellotaped back in the steering wheel.

Splines stripped on a Fiesta XR2 drive shaft. Few dobs of weld at the box, few dobs of weld on the drive shaft, hammered back in. Job done.

I loved that car...

Someone had snapped off an exhaust manifold stud on my old MK3 Golf and used silicone and exhaust paste to try to seal it against the head in place of the stud laugh

Wow, some top-quality bodges here! Suddenly I feel like an occasional cable tie is a small sin against this kind of thing.

I guy on my college course jubilee clipped a couple of beer cans round a rusted part of his exhaust. It actually held for a couple of months too!

Now now, that's a well-respected bodge! Not blatantly dangerous like replacing engine mounts with wood, or sealing a sump with bathroom goop.

I fixed a leaking radiator on one of my mothers old cars with bluetack. Find roughly where coolant is escaping, thoroughly squish into radiator matrix around that general area = fixed (car lived for another year).
