Barges have to be complex and have the lurking potential for financial ruination. The V10 is diesel, and thus has some connection with efficiency and fuel economy. Far too sensible
to be fair, if you're trundling up and down the motorway (like my commute) or whatever the diesel barges are so well refined the diesel is fine. I went in an E65 diesel the other day and it certainly didn't feel like a harsh engine, and cruising at 80 on the motorway you couldn't hear the engine at all. This is why I'm selling my straight 6 petrol which does quite well on fuel for an E65 745i with a 4.4L V8 petrol

Hardly an uberbarge! They're more 5 series sized, for a Jaguar uberbarge it's the XJ one wants....
I usually class 3 series as barges...So
At 1.8 tons and 400bhp the weight and power is near enough the same, however the xjr is six inches longer than the s-type so I guess the extra few inches makes the difference...
fk me - that Merc should have been a lovely beast of a thing.
But W220s aren't the most reliable of things - and they rust .
Try and at least get a drive in a Pheaton - they are supposed to be beautifully engineered things and (in theory) should be a nice thing to drive.
What would ride comfort be like on the 760i - wasn't that era of 7 series - the new model that came out in 2002 one of the first cars to start getting run flats fitted.
How would that affect the ride comfort if it has runflats.
Would expect nothing but the best ride comfort wise on a car like this tbh - that would be part of the appeal of a car like this - so pointless having something with harsh ride - imo.

The best barge of all time is the Mercedes / Porsche W124 E500.
It's the coolest barge in the world, ever (say in Clarkson voice).
I tried to get a video of one of these on youtube showing the understated class of the thing, but ended up with some guy in eastern Europe with the worst wheels in the world, ever (say in Clarkson voice) and with a dead fox on the front of his bonnet

Mind you, seems to be having a bit of fun, that fox is clinging on for dear life.

I actually started a very similar thread almost two years ago. The budget at the time was about ten grand. In the end, I decided to keep an open mind about all of the above cars and just buy the nicest possible example that caught my eye and fell within budget. In the end, that happened to be an A8 4.2. Before you dismiss one over the W12, have a go in one, because I think it's a cracking car. The soundtrack is nicer IMHO than the W12 and it hasn't put a foot wrong in about 45,000 miles in the time I've had it. Any flagship barge is great. Just make sure you like the colour and trim combo and that it's come from a good home.

The odd thing about these is that for a barge they're f'ing tiny inside. OK so they've got a long bonnet and boot but barge like from the interior not so sure.
I disagree. I think the interior is perfectly acceptable and has got a real Gentlmans Club feel. You're making it sound like a Metro! If I was spending £15k of someone else's money for the coolest barge in Christendom, then this is it. And if potential for ruination was the selection criteria, I think I'm the winner....

And unlike the other suggestions on the thread so far, suitable if you are < 50.
Rubbish! I will have a Merc v12 in the next 2 years...The maser above and the S8 are not uberbarges - they are large cars with a good dose of speed and sportiness.
Uberbarges are the opposite of "sporty" - however they will match such cars in outright speed.

Absolutely. I had a Daimler Sovereign when I was 18. You either get barges or you don't. Much as I love my TVR for going for a drive for the sake of going for a drive, I still get a huge amount of satisfaction from the effortless power and comfort of the A8. Money no object, I'd have an S65 AMG tomorrow. Ecurie Ecosse said:
I love my X308 XJR, but agree with the lack of interior space. My Sovereign lwb was sublime in that respect.
Therefore, go for a Daimler Super V8.
This, or even a V12 version of the older X300 (can't remember the code)Therefore, go for a Daimler Super V8.
The Super V8 is an amazing car, I actually bought a more modern X350, but often wish I'd bought an SV8 instead !
