Surely if owning an Uberbarge should drink like a lord and have potential for Financal ruin if it goes wrong, the I suggest the following .

Quite rare, fast, thirsty and will defiantly expensive to run, but will put a massive smile on your face, or is that a nervous smile thinking I wonder what the knocking noise is, and will I get any change out of a £1k to fix it.

And I know it wasn't on the OP list.

I must admit, I am finding the Maseratis harder and harder to ignore, but apparently the duo-select gearbox is a dog and it's well worth holding out for the later fully automatic cars, which unfortunately aren't yet at such tempting prices. Some of the youtube videos of these with upgraded exhaust systems sound incredible.

OK, so my Maser maybe a bit too "sporty", so let's try this. So what were the criteria again? Drinks like a thirsty fish, potentially ruinous, lwb, huge blown V8, loungetastic? Well, there is only one option... this one is cheaper than what I paid for my second hand SMAX....

I've had an XJR... it was outrageously fast, really most indecent! For that it was fun, indeed hilarious at times. The less fun aspects were the palpitation-inducing fuel consumption, 'interesting' handling characteristics and the archaic ergonomics...
For a vast whale of a car, interior space was laughably tight and the lack of 'toys' bugged me after a while... sure it had electric everything, cruise, climate and switchable suspension etc. but there wasn't anything really special to make me feel 'premium', if you know what I mean..... I found the sound from the radio distinctly average too.
For wafting around it was joyous, if a touch wallowy (surprise, surprise) and felt suitably regal. It never failed to induce a smile when prodded into action though. Motorways were easy to crush, 4 up, at indecent velocity and comfort.
It was the sort of car that, if human, would turn up to a black tie dinner party in a tux sporting an outrageously colourful lining, proceed to quaff like a champ, guffaw through a cloud of cigar smoke amid a crowd of enthralled and amused onlookers, shed its jacket during a wild display on the dance floor to reveal a lurid dress shirt only respectable at the front before departing with the foxy daughter of the local laird to party the night away at Digby's or Charlie's or wherever else one could burn the candle at both ends..... not exactly gentlemanly.
Would I have another? yes, in a heartbeat, it was hilarious....
Brilliant!

If I was to be silly, I'd be highly tempted by the Quattroporte. Have seen them down at £15k on fleabay and had to remind myself it's a stupid idea smile

The old Bentley would be an epic barge but again an utter liability.

My current target for semi-sensible barging is a D3 A8, W12 flavour. Convinced myself it's sensible with the following:
1. They're relatively common in diesel form, so it'll be easy to get hold of a lot of common parts
2. Aluminium body, no rust
3. 4wd, still usable in winter

Obviously this is utter bks, there's bugger all sensible about it,the main thing is it's not as daft as it could be with, for example, a ten year old Maserati!

How about the Mercedes CL55 AMG?

Monster of an engine - one of my favourites - looks awesome IMO with the pillarless open windows.

I would guess a fair bit quicker than the above also.

ETA I once test drove a manual Ferrari F430, and there was a CL55 behind me also being test driven (dealer plates) and I had to really try quite hard to get away from the CL.
