I've just moved from e92 m3 to the same 507 coupe as in this article - I had the m3 for a month overlap so I was able to compare both back to back. I love the 507 - obviously noise is the big USP but it is quicker than the m3 and IMO will hold its own in the twisties - it has an excellent front end, great steering feel and extremely precise when you position it - the m3 feels smaller (and is) and is slightly better balanced overall I would say but it does not have the feel the c63 has.

M3 DCT is a work of art in comparison to the Mercs MCT but you just adjust to it.

I am very impressed but it does creak and rattle as mentioned by previous posters so build quality is not as good as the BMW.

I love V8s.... my current daily driver is a Jag XFR and I had a C63 saloon before that, a C55 before that. The XFR scratched a 500 bhp itch which I had. They aren't going to make cars like this for much longer and I intend to enjoy them while I can before the nanny brigade bans them.... or the manufacturers start swallowing sensible pills.
Will definitely try a C63/E63 at some point but having difficulty saying goodbye to my XFR. Cruised to Bristol in total comfort with the elderly outlaws in the back a few weekends ago then did a track day at Brands a couple days later. Chilled or mental in equal measure. Just brilliant fun on the M25 playing with tailgating Audis and Beemers. Best thing about saloon V8's is that they depreciate like lead balloons. Enjoy while you can.

I'm very surprised by the comments of creaks and rattles, not heard any in my Dad's.

Very jealous of the fact you have had both the M3 and now the 507! Hope you enjoy it.

It's up to customers. If they buy a car on that basis then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Whereas if they refuse to listen to all the PC bullst concerning downsizing being best and demand what they've always had then the manufacturers will just have to listen and provide what the customers want. It's probably a case of continue to buy it or lose it.
New cars for me are becoming more and more irrelevant / uninteresting / irritating etc. as time goes on...and I'm only 25!
In 15-20 years time, PHer's will look back at cars being released today and say crap like 'those were good days', 'I miss those type of cars' etc etc.

Some people go on like cars from the 70s, 80s, 90s etc were the greatest, and are irreplaceable. Its like some people don't want/don't like change and progress.

I guess c63 owners are a bit biased... But I've owned loads of metal - and I think this is easily the best all rounder.

I'm on my 2nd C63, I've got 3 nippers below 10 years old, and they always say "dadee can we go to school in the brum car?"

I bought it new, and got a MASSIVE discount off the list, with used values you need a good chip off to start with.

The 1st one I bought was a so called "static demonstrator" with 450 miles on it, it was a performance pack car, I remember driving out of the Liverpool main dealer and thinking; 1) I'm going to get car jacked before I get to the motorway 2) I'm going to lose my licence (twice) before I get to the M6...

My 2nd one is a 'regular' AMG ('regular' is a relative way to describe these things)

Fuel - yeah, it's crap, best real world mpg is 18-20... I did see 28.5 on a run once...

I've never seen less than 15 mpg, any lower would surely mean a stretch in your local HMP, I simply cannot believe that any one could drive one for long enough to get 10 mpg over a real distance on public roads, a 50 mile blast would see every plod from here to Glasgow in hot pursuit...

I think the thing I REALLY like is that my plain looking Mercedes estate car (with lots of exhausts, huge wheels, massive brake discs and a sounding like an earthquake) mostly passes completely unnoticed in everyday plodding...

Until you hit the loud pedal of course...

I fancy an SLS - especially as values are getting a good bit lower than 100k... But I can't help thinking that it would be a bit too high profile for regular, everyday use? The wagon just slips around, without looking like a prat banging the doors if you open the gull wings too close to the next car in the airport car park...!

It's great fun, I love it, my neighbour is a 'black Audi man' he's just got ANOTHER new (yawn..) black Audi diesel, and this time, shock horror, it's a 3 litre diesel... He thinks he's now driving some kind of road going Le Mans car, I came home a few weeks back, and guess who was in front of me, the 63 left it for dead, v power fuelled and in the zone - these things can molto head bang on a dry road, I don't care about the fuel use - I don't pay for it... ;-))

Own one whilst you can, this kind of power, emissions and general 'non green' credentials, surely cannot be long for this 'nanny state legislators' world...

:-))

No thats not what I'm saying. The C63 is a great hoon, it drives well the engine is outstanding but at this price everything should work. You are right, in that to some people the driving experience will matter more than the details/problems I highlighted. (There were more than 3 problems)!

For me I just wanted what I paid for. I used the car as a daily driver, so while I enjoyed it when I really drove it, I equally hated it when I was doing the daily commute. But hey that's just my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right.

I am around 15 on the daily drive to work, get 10 when enjoying the car...have seen 23 on the motorway though...

I've managed to get a V8 for every occasion.smile
I can't get enough of them, but I am a tiny bit tempted to get myself a V12 at some point. I love the brutal honesty of a V8 soundtrack though. cloud9

A truly great engine BUT a very poorly executed car. I have just sold my MY12 C63 Coupe after being driven insane by the myriad of niggles, rattles and squeaks, heated seats that turn themselves off, an online command system that won't work with iPhone, the list is endless.

Try looking for the extra DAB information (playing now and next), on Planet Rock because you won't find it. Mercedes didn't add the bit of software code that makes it work. They did promise to get it working with a fix sometime in 2014.

So....
A few ICE issues and a bad wiring connection and it had to go?

I work for Holden, and our lease scheme means a 3.6 V6 costs the same as a 6.0 V8.

I don't need a V8, the V6 is perfectly capable.....but every time I go to re-order I say to myself that it only uses about $2 more in fuel a day, which is less than a cup of coffee, and tick the V8 box smile

They are very addictive!

i really wanted a cls 55 but was disappointed that all of the great noise could not be heard from the well insulated interior. even with the windo down, just too muted.
same with the C63.
I now have a manual VXR8 which does the job for me...great noises !

If you don't let the engine bed, it will really drink oil!!
Yep, and treating any engine too gently during the break-in period is a sure-fire way to ensure it drinks excessive oil for the rest of its life.

Sure, you should avoid the top end of the rev range, and always wait until it's warmed up before making it work hard - but you SHOULD make it do some proper work to push those cylinder rings out against the walls properly, otherwise they won't bed in nicely. Babying an engine during the break-in will ruin it.

Correct

On a rebuild you run for 20 mins on first fire-up at 2500 rpm to bed the camshaft in, then change the oil and do your timing etc.

Edelbrock reckon to run at different speeds when cruising - not just tootling along at 2000 rpm also extending the rev range up to 70% for 500 miles, then 85% for the next 500 then change the oil and away you go.

I believe AMG engines are given a basic run-in on the bench to bed the cams etc

I don't mind change or progress when it's a genuine improvement (I'm a computer engineer by trade) but most of the new stuff I see is pointless gimmickry designed with built-in obsolescence. - I like my air conditioning, for example but the drive by wire throttle on my BMW occasionally makes me want to hunt down those who designed it and all the eco-crap on new cars (including downsized turbo motors replacing large-capacity NA ones) is just something to break and cost £thousands (plenty of experience of this in the family with turbos, DPFs, start stop etc.) when it's out of warranty.

To be honest this is the commonest criticism of the car, go over to MBClub and there's pages on it. The suspension is so hard it shakes everything just a little bit loose, mine rattles round the speedo at the moment, but the Mercedes people will sort it, or else....
