Definitely a sensible choice, but not one that really tugs at the heart strings :S
True, but for price / reliability they're not a bad thing.

Buy a Range Rover Sport otherwise you will end up buying one of the others and selling it within a few years for what you originally wanted which will cost you more smile

Huge potential for big bills though I.e. Turbos, Gearboxes and Suspension I'd advise trying to get one under warranty or at the very least an inspection done by a specialist.

D3 HSE.

Has all the toys you will need, plenty you don't. Doesn't suffer the poor image other cars have so gets left alone in car parks etc.
Plenty of accessories to make it your own.
Same chassis, engine etc as the RRS. There are plenty of specialists and forums you can visit and search as every problem these cars can have, will already have happened and a how to fix it guide there to solve it.
You just have to use the search functions!

Mine, picture taken today after finishing a weekends off roading competition. I was ranked against plenty of kitted Defenders and placed very high compared to them. Not bad for stock car bar off road tyres and a sump guard.

Btw, i bought it when i turned 25, the same week i started college. I'm now 26.
Mine gets 23mpg average, due to the tyres and my short urban commute to work.
Hasn't been bad on the reliability side, it's 9 years old and has 112k, so has had a few bushes and ball joints from wear and tear but has never let me down. Plus it's a damn good off roader.
Ive had 4x4s since i was 21, i prefer driving them to normal cars as they are relaxing comfy places to sit and munch the miles away. Plus i have a kitcar for fast driving so best of both worlds.

that looks like good offroading fun!

on the subject of 'which 4x4 on that sort of budget', here's how i'd go about it

if you'r a keen off-road fan go for a disco, rrs, ffrr land cruiser or shogun.

within that if you're more concerned about reliability i'd go japanese. on the other hand if you're more concerned about creature comforts, character, i'd go with rrs, disco or ffrr in that order (i don't like the looks of the ffrr)

on the other hand if you're likely to remain on tarmac (like me), i'd go for the BMW E70 if i could afford it, if not the E53. they're suvs so well designed they drive like cars! awesome pickup, cornering etc for heavy beasts. but i'd go nowhere near plugging that kind of mud like in that previous post in those!

i'd forget about the mercs and volvos they just dont have character. not my kettle of fish.

if you're concerned about reliability go for a jap car.. but then they are crap when it comes to character.

the thing i don't like about the disco, rrs, ffrr in that price range is that those are very old aged designs. until the recent model refresh it has been the same old models with bling led lighting etc for about a decade or so.. since bmw cannibalised them and then ford kept them going and so on. nothing new or innovative. (i just love their new designs but they're in a different price bracket). owners here will be quick to object but the reliability records are also appalling.

don't for a moment think the bmws are reliable either. common danger points include turbos, auto boxes, transfer boxes, air suspension, etc. (apart from other niggles i can go on about but easy to fix)

in comparison, the land cruisers, hiluxes i've had have been blo0dy work horses! mrs once pumped petrol into my land cruiser and ran till it stopped! called me and said the car wouldn't start and it was smoking like a chimney when cranked! i just cleaned it up, filled it up with diesel and off it went - till i eventually sold it some 20k miles later!

each to their own i guess, these are my views smile

i've had land cruisers, hiluxes prior to my current BMW E53.

For a 23 year old a discovery has a poor image and looks like his dads car. A black RRS is what he really wants.

If he buys a black RRS, he will look like either:

A). A pimp

B). A drug dealer

C). A football player

D). An orange mum

E). A tt

None of the above really conjures up the right image.

Very true, with 22's, a Khan bodykit, some low hanging exhausts and DRLs, plus tints if not already on. biggrin

Im 25 and bought my Escalade a year ago. For the price I paid I got a 2005 with 60k miles compared to the 2003 RR and X5s that had over 100k on them.
I'm 25 now and my insurance is £320 for the year with Adrian Flux and 7 years NCB. Great big car, shifts well thanks to being a 6 litre V8.
Parts are cheap from rock auto and arrive within 4 days.
Comfortable, high up and effortless to drive even being a left hand drive.

I've had a Range Rover before and currently FOUR of my friends have X5s and since having the Escalade could never go to something like a RR or X5.

To everyone on ph a black rrs may not be right but they are so popular because thats what the masses want. Most people want a black or white one with big wheels. The upper class ph elite want a green one with small wheels but generally a 23 year old would want a black one with big wheels and thats wht 23 year old girls will like which is important smile

A Disco would tick quite a few boxes and although the image isn't quite as 'youth' as a RRS I am sure I could deal with it...but sat in one a few months ago and I was pretty underwhelmed in terms of interior plastics and layout. Arguably a pre facelift RRS suffers from the same problem but I've yet to sit in one of them. I see lots of LR products near where I live/work but next door have a 59 plate Disco 4 and peversely that's another black mark against the Disco.

Sorry I know I'm coming across as a horrible little snob (especially for my age) but I'm really not...promise smile

Wow congrats on the Caddy! If they had made them in RHD then I would be quite tempted but I'd be reluctant to drive a left hooker (or get a conversion as others have suggested). What was your experience with the Range Rover?

If you want a LR product, the only choice is the FFRR or a D3. The RRS is neither mount nor summit. If your mates are smoking around in X5's etc, you will be the daddy when you rock up in your FF.

Yet you're trying to sell him a diesel Toureg. Its going to look like he borrowed his mums car if he went with that surely.

I don't see many 23 year olds wanting the boring VW over the RR... I know I wouldn't have.

4 pages in, it must be time for a U-turn.

23, no kids, no dogs, no furniture - wise up, for some proper fun and crumpet get a ragtop.
Some even have heated seats.
