The Volvo D5 is a good engine, easily tunable with a remap for some extra ponies as it would likely feel lacking against the 330d to start with, figures don't tell the whole story though, they are pretty good on a longer run - the sound around town at low speeds can be a bit crap though, a rattly diesel engine note.
My wife isn't the most sympathetic driver in the world but even she manages 40+mpg doing the school run in the morning with a v70 D5. Its a strong proven engine that will take high mileage with ease.J8 SVG said:
Good shot, dont know if i could tolerate that front end though I have the latest 215PS D5 in my V60 (see "Garage").
It's probably somewhere between the old 6-cyl 325d and 330d in performance terms. My average since new in December 2012 is 51.3mpg (not shabby given the performance on offer), although mine are mainly motorway miles.
I have no idea what the OP's budget it, but if it's a new / company car then the D5 needs a closer look before it's replaced by Volvo's forthcoming I-ART 4-cyl engines, which are impressive but won't have the 5-cyl character.
119/120g Co2 makes it comparatively very low on Co2 (and, ergo, tax) - I couldn't find anything better than the D5 for performance-to-Co2 apart from a 330d.

Might be a good idea to remove your postcode? With all due respect, the 330d lump is in another league in terms of performance to those other engines mentioned (with the exception of audi's latest V6)
It took me 14months to (not)find the 330d i wanted, and in the end it had to be a 335d.......... (fab engine, terrible transmission!)

I guess the OP will have to spend longer searching, or cast the net wider (my wife and I just went nationwide to find the right car for her - it's worth a long trip to buy the right car, in our case nearly 7 hours round trip).
The other option, as mentioned already, would be to look at a petrol 330i - most people are averaging 30mpg and topping at 40 if they're really careful, and bear in mind that petrol is cheaper than diesel (it'll still be more expensive in fuel, but work out how much for your mileage). Both are very reliable cars. The only problem is the awful throttle response compared to the diesel - I've owned two petrol 3 litre BMWs in recent years (a 330ci and a Z4C), but have ended up with a diesel one now purely to get away from the throttle response issue.
