It won't *actually* do 53mpg though, will it. I mean, according to BMW my 120D does 63mpg.
Not unless it's being towed it doesn't.
Still, even if these do 40mpg in the real world, that's a great blend of performance and economy. I wonder if they've managed to make it sound half decent through the quad exhausts?
The folks at Alpina don't usually lie about their figures. I'm getting about 42 mpg on my D5 (official figures suggest 48mpg) and I'm never really trying to drive it economically. Some folks ran it on a track and the worst possible economy figure they could get was ~28mpg. So I'd assume that 50mpg should be achievable in the real world. Not unless it's being towed it doesn't.

RWD only in the UK disappointingly. Otherwise, I would be very very tempted. I don't understand why as surely they would get good takeup on that as an option. BMW obviously have the hardware as they sell the regular 3er with 'xdrive' in RHD...

You can get that easily (and more) out of the N47s1 twin turbo engine. Problem is, its a dog rough motor and the dreaded timing chain issues are widespread (I speak from experience). If Alpina have any sense they'll avoid it.
Sorry to break it to you but the timing chain stuff on the N47 four-cylinder family is exactly the same on the N57 six-cylinder, and it carries just the same risk. The only difference is that since the overwhelming majority of BMW diesel production and sales since the problem began have been four-cylinder. So just because of the number of cars out there, almost every case you hear about on the internet is a 4-cylinder car. If you actually look for N57 failures they are out there too.AdamPT said:
I'd have that Touring in a heartbeart. Love that green but get spooked by the green car omens. Had 2 green cars, both written off(neither my fault)
Have you had any other cars written-off - I ask only because people can be VERY selective about things relating to superstition (it's how they come to exist).I worked with someone once who battered-on about green being unlucky for years - he'd almost been killed in a green car once.
When pressed, he'd admit he'd been in no-less than 11 serious accidents - banned as a result of 5 of them - jailed for repeatedly driving without a licence or insurance but the ONLY thing which matters was the ONE accident he had in a green car - the only green car he'd ever owned...
