BMW, Audi and Merc do small cars, so why are there no small Jags?

2015 will see an A4 / 3 series size car from Jaguar as well as a couple of others.

Much smaller margins so you need much more volume. That in turn means more factory space etc.

I suspect it's a tough market to start from scratch in and with a brand that would place you at the top end of price in a market where most sales are the bottom end.

I believe they had or have plans but I'm not sure they have access to the debt required to bring it to market.

JLR will have something to come soon but prior to Tata ownership the development money wasn't available.

It's coming. JLR had to be making money to get to that bit of the market, but everything else seems to be going quite well now so I understand that after the new XF, the small car will be next on the list.

The XF replacement has been moved forwards because it's now a little small in comparison with the 5er, E class and A6, which have all gone a little larger this time around and so a new small Jag would have been only a little bit smaller than the current XF.

I go with this - time / resource / funding.

I do hope so. They are certainly doing well but TATA is having to suck them dry to finance their debt elsewhere.

The SUV that was bandied about last month looked rather lovely. I hadn't appreciated there was going to be a whole family.

Looking forward to the new ones, should be nice, Jag have really come on of late, the F type is a stunner.

I think they are losing the dodgy image of old boys in blazers, Gin, Arthur Daley, Golf clubs etc and hopefully keeping the good bits, makes you wonder what they were thinking with the X type, s type and much as I loved the old XJ's they do seem to have dragged it on a bit long, have loved all the new stuff they have done.

Even when every piece which mentioned said SUV talked about a family on the platform? OK.

It will not be coming as a coupe apparently.

Can a company that is investing $4 billion a year on product be described as being sucked dry?

It's probably down to the fact that I have a series of more interesting and important things going on in my life. wink

There was - the X Type - but it was really just a Mondeo in a posh frock. Apparently there is a new 'small' Jag on its way and it'll be done properly this time, so hopefully a truly credible alternative to its German counterparts.
