Which fun daily driver up to 3k?
Discussion
Looking for suggestions for a fun yet practical daily driver. Current daily is a 2003 BMW 330ci convertible, but it's probably a bit too nice and refined to run alongside my TVR. So the plan is to hopefully downgrade to something cheaper and more practical. Budget probably 3k - age and mileage of the car isn't too important, but hopefully something fairly practical that doesn't use as much fuel as the TVR!
At the moment I've been considering an Impreza but don't know enough about them yet to pick which would be the right one for me.
Another different idea would be to pick up a 4x4 (useful as I live in the depths of the countryside).
Interested to hear any thoughts.

Subaru Forester?
thing is, I can't think of all that much stuff that is as much or more fun than a 330i that doesn't cost quite a bit more to run, or is smaller and less suited to longer journeys, motorway etc etc. Have you considered switching to a coupé - lighter, better to drive and a bit less thirsty.

I bought the 330 as a compromise when I sold my Boxster to move house - was meant to be fun and practical. But then I bought the TVR, and it seems a bit excessive to have two soft tops. Plus having 4 proper seats might be useful when it comes to having family/friends come down to stay.thing is, I can't think of all that much stuff that is as much or more fun than a 330i that doesn't cost quite a bit more to run, or is smaller and less suited to longer journeys, motorway etc etc. Have you considered switching to a coupé - lighter, better to drive and a bit less thirsty.
The BMW is a great car, just not using it enough to justify having something as nice like that.
Classic Impreza would be perfect. I spent £1400 on a light modded 99v uk 2000 turbo wagon (~250bhp with map and car-back exhaust) as a winter beater a few years back and immediately "got" the Impreza thing.
Practical, awesome in the snow, reliable, quick, fun. Some cheap mods make a huge difference to steering and handling balance (Whiteline anti-lift kit and roll centre kit for £250 all-in).

P.s. My current 370/370 2.5 P1 averages 23mpg on an 80 mile per day commute so fuel economy really isn't that bad. On a 300 mile blast round the highlands that dropped to 18-ish, still not bad for the performance I think.
I'd be happy with those figures as I don't have much of a commute - which Impreza would be the best to look for - at least a WRX?http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/f...
I loved my one of these. Bigger in the back than it looks.

Have had a look at a 5 - love the look of it, but didn't think I'd be able to get a 540 for my budget.
Your budget should be enough to get a nice one if you look carefully. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
