Just picked up an E39 530D Touring for that money, which is great, practical and still fun!.

Personally I wouldn't go lower than a 325i, you will miss the performance (and the larger sixes aren't that much more thirsty).

The touring is surprisingly practical with the seats down. On my old E36 I managed to get 4x winter tyres and 4x16 inch alloys (with summer tyres) all in the back.

As mentioned, E39 is also worth a look, great car. If you can pick up a decent 530d Touring, that'd be ideal.

Keep contemplating an impreza too as the smart being only a two seater is a bit impractical at times.

You'd hate the fact it only achieves the same MPG as a 330i.
