Volvo V70 - 503. Sounds quite high, it's no performance car.

Peugeot 205 Tarmac rally car, 275bhp from 2.0L engine with 88mm bore gives a PI of 916.

Unfortunately it would have a fairly low score on the reliability index.

Definitely. Start one smile. I'll do it if you don't want to. I usually enjoy reading about stuff like this in the Technical area. I notice 300bhp is here already, the other guys from there will probably be along soon. Get your hard hat ready!

Nice! What was it as stock, Mi-16 motor I'm guessing? Any idea how much that cost to build from stock?

I suspect its torque characteristics help it along, and that it would be a good candidate for tuning. No expert, just an assumption.

If we were to do that, it'd be worthwhile putting all the details in, bore, stroke, cylinders, torque, power, PI etc. One for standard engines and another one for modified engines, which would include the before and after figures and costs involved.

I'll have a look at it later. smile

It started as an Mi-16 but the light alloy block simply wasn't stiff enough, and we had all sorts of problems with e.g. core plugs and oil seals walking out and problems with the liners moving so the Mi16 head is now bolted an iron block (GTi6 I think). Enormous cams in it, so much lift that the cam cover had to be machined to clear the lobes! Forged crank, rods and pistons, dry sumped and running 8 injector TB setup. I don't know the exact numbers but initial cost around 10k and I suspect it's cost quite a lot more since then. It was running through an H pattern dog box to start with, and the "Gripper" LSD decided to escape into the bellhousing and took out the steel flywheel/multiplate clutch and geared starter, which was unfortunate. Now running a SADEV sequential box.

Very competitive when it's running, but currently being rebuilt again due to a holed piston. A little less power and lots more reliability is on the cards I think.

In action at Smeatharpe

Wow, pretty impressive indeed! But not quite as impressive as:

941! eek
only if you believe the 270 figure...

OK, started one for factory engines, if everyone would like to add theirs!

I'll start a modified one later.

Yes - beats the R500 - but are these very highly tuned, low volume engines really "production"?

Valid question. I would say yes, insofar as you'd trust the figures (no pub dyno outputs) and (AFAIK), you'd get a warranty with them?

exactly...

all these 'specialist' LV cars have questionable power claims backed up by nothing particular

So you don't believe that BAC or Caterham are actually making the figures they are claiming?

They are impressive figures, certainly enough to question, but you'd hope they were a bit more credible than Billy Two sts down the pub who's 2 litre Astra puts out 340bhp...

No wonder it nick named the boat anchor!
I think it deserves some kind of achievement for only managing to get 170bhp out of a 5l V8 wink
