I have just sold a car without an mot or taxed, been SORN for a year. Because of this I couldn't take the plates off, the new owner has said once they get it all sorted he will let me know so I can go ahead and apply to remove them and put back to the originals.
Now as the logbook will be in their name is this going to cause problems? How would I go about it ? Thanks.

Unless you are friendly with this bloke, he has your balls in his hands so to speak.

Call the DVLA (I presume you haven't done this?) The law changed last year so that you can transfer the plate provided the car has had an MOT within the last four years.

I think you will find that unless you have placed the plates on a retention certificate before selling, then they legally belong to him.

So if he does not play along with your verbal agreement you have lost them

I'm in the process of transfering some plates to a certificate myself. i had to give a cheque for £105 (it's more if you want more than a year) Once you send off the money, form, copy of tax disc, MOT certificate (original) and V5 you are then in the hands of the Gods....or in this case the DVLA

So far I have had back a new V5 with a new numberplate, and no further docs, so i can't hand over the vehicle I have sold until I have a new tax disc for remainder of the term, and have no MOT for the car, and worse no retention certificate with my nice plate!

I am going to try and follow this up tomorrow and find out where the rest of the docs are!

good luck with yours!

You better hope you were honest and upfront in your description and weren't planning on hiding behind 'sold as seen'...
