Exactly, for the same reasons I dont rate Messi as a soccer player. Make him join Sorpe Utd for a season and see how good he is, then I might change my mind
messi would get the st kicked out of him. And end up injured all season. Football is like motor racing. Good at one type of racing does not mean good at all.

Not content with the grudging admiration the 4-times world champion has brought back, then his puppet-master speaks again.

I don't think there are too many who find Alonso a particularly nice guy. He probably feels that he deserves to win because he is with Ferrari.

Nothing against his driving, which is great to watch, but the guy is a tool.

He's certainly frustrated at Ferrari. I wondered earlier in the year if he was trying to do a Prost and get himself fired.

I think tool is a little far, but he certainly plays plenty of mind games, not always to his own advantage.

i'm more than happy to be proven wrong.

thinking about it maybe I am a bit harsh, I think that all f1 drivers are pretty nice, especially in comparison to 99% of other sportspeople

The ones I've met have generally been very nice - both at mass media events and smaller events (dinner in a motorhome kind of thing).

Damon is the only exception. Not terribly nice.

Let us not forget Mansell, that man is a . Everyone I know who have had anything to do with him, says the same. I nearly met him, but he had other more important things to do than attend the publicity do he had organised, so he left early.

I have only met f1 drivers when I was about 13.

In some very unbelievable and highly unlikely story me and my dad drove into silverstone on some kind of drivers family day.
This was back in 1994.

We met Hill, Barrichello, Brundle and Coulthard. Plenty of others including Shumi was there but didn't speak to him!
Damn well can't remember which one it was, but one gave me a ride down the pit straight in a McLaren f1 which was awesome. I have a feeling it was Brundle, but I can't be sure, I was more interested in the car! Even let me sit in the drivers seat, rev it a bit and drove it forwards all of 10 meters.

One driver had a look round our car, and we went over to the restaurant (though I seem to remember it more as a canteen) and chatted more with them away from the cars.

Every single one of them was thoroughly nice.

fastforward around 7/8 years, and house sharing with the girlfriend of an ipswich town player, went out on quite a few night with a good dozen players. Every single one of them was a complete tool. I know they exist, but have yet to meet a nice rugbyist, footballer or baseballer(whilst in the states) and I've met loads.

As a sport, f1 definitely attracts better people smile

I've heard similar, especially around his project in Devon. But only hearsay so I need to be fair wink

We were verbally abused and had beer cans thrown at us at Silverstone in 1991 for daring to have a Brazilian flag amongst the "Mansell Mania". There are morons everywhere, some like football, some like F1...

I find British fans the least tolerant. They will boo other supporters as well as the driver they don't like. I would describe British fans as tribal - seen in football as well. It has to be one team or teh other, it can't just be a passion for the sport.

Take Monza - huge respect and passion in the fans, for each other and mostly the drivers (though Lewis does seem disliked). Mansell, Button, Alonso, Schumacher, etc all hugely regarded. McLaren and Ferrari fans, etc sitting together with no issues.

Silverstone was packed with morons this year. The moto gp crowd were much nicer in comparison.

It puts it into perspective when you realise that Sebastian has won as many races this season consecutively as Mark has won in his entire career in F1

I'd never thought of it that way. Ouch.

Well I'm glad someone else sees it too. I have respect for Alonso's ability but I cannot understand the love for him in general. As you say he is a complete tool and he is hardly whiter than white either.

Also, he blows far too much hot air in the media. Once again in this article he can't resist taking a side-swipe at Vettel; implying it is all down to the car when that clearly isn't the only factor. I actually think Vettel could go toe to toe with Alonso in equal machinery and win, it would certainly be a lot closer than a lot of people will admit to.

Next year will be interesting at Ferrari. Even as a Kimi fan I can admit I think Alonso is probably the better/faster driver, but I do wonder how Alonso will cope with a team mate he can't boss around or manipulate and someone who will not be phased by anything (other than not getting paid...). Even if they make a dog of a car Ferrari have a great chance of winning the constructors title with this line up, but I do wonder if they could potentially cost each other the WDC.

Shame Alonso was looking a bit pedestrian in Brazil.
Did nothing to stop Webber passing twice, yet had a similar speed, and was able to keep with webber despite webber getting the fastest laptime around lap 29.

I think Ferrari made a mistake going for kimi next year. As you say, two vying racers will make for another button/hamilton combination. stealing point from each other. I would want to see a young/experienced combination in my own team.
I'm a huge fan of the racing styles of both Kimi and Alonso however, so it will be a fun team to watch, lets hope they have a good package!

That worked well for Red Bull :-)
