I'd quite like a brand new cerbera with a warranty too...

Ditto the post about the S2K.

The new vs old comparison is still just as irrelevant as it ever was. Only now, this new new vs old comparison hasn't depreciated as much as the old new vs old comparison silly
IMO - the old vs new comparison is relevant depending on the car. If I had a budget of 30k I would not be buying a new MX-5. It simply isn't special enough to warrant that outlay, so if I was looking for a roadster - I would look elsewhere. Which many people would. So it is relevant.
It's only relevant if you compare like with like. I could say an S2000 is stupid waste of money because I can't get two St Bernards in the boot and therefore I would buy a Volvo. Whether you like it or not there is actually nothing that compares directly to this MX5.

You can't get anything with a 200bhp NA engine and folding hardtop that drives anywhere near a well as the MX5. The Elise is not a viable everyday car, the GT86/BRZ isn't a convertible, a Boxster is much bigger and has a certain image some may not like, the 370z is a soft top and has a very average engine, the SLK simply isn't as good a drive and has an auto gearbox, I quite like the new Z4 but it is properly expensive with necessary options and the S2000, no matter how good it looks on paper wouldn't steer as beautifully as the MX 5 if you spent your £20k saving entirely on the steering.

Is £30k too much money for this car? Yes, but only if you're prepared to compromise.

I would rather buy something like this 2011 MX5 £12k
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Spend £5k fitting a supercharger kit to circa 235 bhp
http://www.bbrgti.com/product_details.php?id=11653...

And then £2k on brakes + suspension and £1k on a pair of nice seats

All sorted for £20k

If the origami top is not a necessity, the Jota has a similar price and performance (0-60 of ~6 seconds) to a Ginetta G40R. Now that would be an interesting comparison road/track-day article.

Clearly a TVRist but you can't compare a new car price with a used one, otherwise we would all by driving used M5s... wait a minute....

can't resist:

I'd prefer a 2 year old 7,900 mile 310bhp Porsche Boxster S instead !

To me this seems like a brilliant car, the only way it could be better was if it was official through Mazda, so all their deals could be used.

Having ran a new MX-5 for 2 years I know it is a great base to start from, it isn't the last word in luxury, but this would be a far better daily prospect than an Elise.

Just for info, some people might not appreciate how expensive the Mazda engine is to tune. A couple of grand gets you about 185bhp. Any more than that and the price really ramps up. I think it is a consequence of the variable valve timing, but whatever it is, getting this much horsepower out of this engine is expensive. Interestingly, this could be the very last chance you have to get a 200bhp NA 4 cylinder sports car. Everything else is going to have a turbo which, for those of us who who rather eat an industrial size tub of swarfega than buy a turbo/supercharged car, is a tragedy.

fk £30k.

Its a 20K car, it should have had a nice chassis and a bit more poke as standard.

fk me.

BRZ or GT86 a better choice.

I like the MX-5, I even had one for 3 years or so.

But at £30k you would have to be insane. Hell, £5k more than a GT86 that many consider to be £5k overpriced itself!

This will end up a rarer car than a McLaren P1...

Why are so many people comparing the price of a new car to a second-hand car? Next we'll have Quentin Wilson saying you can by a Rolls-Royce for Mondeo money.

The reason this car is expensive is because it's done by a small supplier where there are minimal economies of scale. If you want VFM stick to base OEM cars.

Isn't this the same price as the Litchfield fettled Toyaburu GT86/BRZ? Looks really bad VFM in comparison. I don't think its tiny niche is justification enough, after all the very reason why the MX-5 is underpowered in the first place is the whole "you don't need loads of power in a convertible" mantra. Its like taking the whole raison detre for the MX-5 in the first place and turning it on its head.

Almost worth it for the engine alone. So few nice n/a engines in sports cars these days

Does this have the same Duratec engine in it as the Caterhams have or have I got that wrong?

If so, quite easy to get 200hp out of them no?

Nope. Very difficult indeed. Surprising but true.
