BMW 435i M Sport: PH Fleet

Can the 4 Series maintain our interest until the M4 arrives?

So the BMW 435i M Sport joined the PH fleet with the mission to prove that it's not all grown-up and boring. Trouble is, we've not really used it for journeys you could describe as anything else. So let's just say verdict on that will have to wait, for now.

Not too long though - it'll be heading away from the M25 slog very soon and hopefully able to prove itself on more testing terrain.

How far will good looks get you?
How far will good looks get you?
For now though it's racking up the miles on the boring motorway commute, a great deal of which places greater emphasis on stuff like infotainment systems, comfort and attempting to make sitting stationary near junction 17 as painless as possible. Yes, the 306hp straight-six is currently somewhat wasted.

So how about that manual gearbox? Well, given the above usage it's probably not the set-up you'd choose either, an auto 420d probably the car I should be driving. But this is PH so an oversized petrol straight-six and three pedals it is!

In the typical BMW style it's a bit rubbery and long of throw, the clutch a little indistinct and the footrest catches your shoe as you move your foot. Clear enough manuals probably aren't especially high on the development agenda these days but the calibration with the engine is better than I'd hoped.

In the M135i the eight-speed auto has clearly been very cleverly matched to the N55 engine's power delivery, successfully masking any peaks and troughs that may lie in its power and torque curves. No hiding with a manual but, guess what, there aren't any! The turbo straight-six might not be quite as creamy smooth as the normally aspirated ones of old and doesn't have that stirring top-end howl either. But there's enough sense of there being something more special than a four-cylinder under there, which is what you'd want. And I'm hoping the PH-worthy drivetrain will come into its own on the North Yorkshire roads I'll be driving soon.

There's no hiding that it doesn't punch as hard as it does in the M135i though, that seemingly modest 14hp and 37lb ft deficit and 85kg weight penalty adding up. It's rapid but not rabidly fast like the 'baby M' - we await the M235i with renewed interest and wonder where that'll leave the 4 Series equivalent.

I'm also keen to see how the chassis copes with some more demanding driving too. So far it feels a tad 'on its toes' and rather oversprung and underdamped. The latter diagnosis backed up by the fact it's actually better over speed bumps in the firmer Sport setting, the dampers not topping out with the thwack they do in comfort and pitch much better contained at the same moderate speed. In the M135i I configured the harder dampers just for the Sport Plus mode; in the 4 Series I've got them selected for Sport too. Again, I'm more interested in how this impacts on corners than speed bumps so will report back on this next time round.

And the Dyson vac? Well, if I'm sanguine about the outside of the car getting a coating of M25 grime I do get a bit fussy about the interior given how much time I spend in it. And now that the legendary 'lawn stripes' BMW press cars are always delivered with have faded I was glad to have the offer of a Dyson DC58 Animal to test out and see if I could return the mats to their striped glory. With its 'V6' motor and various other exciting sounding tech, the Dyson's aggressive sounding name isn't actually far off the mark and it's a fearsome little sucker for sure. More on this in due course.

In brief? Very nice - I've got 'infotainment' noted down to cover alongside 'twisties' for next update but I have to say if you're going to sit stationary on the M25 it's a very nice place to do it; even makes Bluetooth audio sound good!

How is that new steering wheel compared to the M135i, ok, or still requiring hands like Richard Kiel?

Im still am having trouble understanding why BMW has named the 4 door the '3 series' and the 3 door coupe the '4 series'? Surely it makes logical sense to have them the other way around, not to mention it would be more in keeping with the ascending size order on the range?

Also this would mean they could have kept the iconic 'm3' name to the coupe, like how it should be.

I know it's just a name, and no doubt the 435i will be a great car in its own right.....I just feel a bit disappointed about the whole shabangg.

It seems a very nice car the 435i, probably a jack of all trades that also masters them to some extent. However I cannot afford one.

The Dyson seems interesting. It's battery powered so competing again mains bigger vacs and expensive. However it does seem to hold the advantage of not needing time to run a power cable out. Questions I'd like answering.

1. Does it really suck. ( I bet you have always wanted to say something lent to you for test really sucks but up to now have had to bite your journalists tongue)
2. What is the amount of sucking you get for one charge?
3. Does it have one of those accessories that is very thin and allows you to get at the bits between the seats and the outside of the car.
4. Easy to get rid of the stuff it has sucked up? Tipped in the road perhaps for the council, no annoying dust bags?

It seems a high price but if lasted a few years could serve lazy folk well. Looking forward to the review.

Their naming convention is very simple - odd numbers scaling up for sizes of saloon; the next-up even numbers for the coupes. Broadly speaking, the 8-series was the 7-series coupe; 6-series is the 5-series coupe; 4-series is the 3-series coupe; 2-series is the 1-series coupe.

Not complicated. tongue out

Thanks Dan, I know there are more obvious and notable aspects of a car such as the 435i M Sport that requires discussing, however deciding which options are worth considering are also of interest. I had a Harmon Kardon system in my E46 330i and I always spec it when playing with the car configurator the BMW website, my guess it that it probably can't keep up with the likes of BOSE but I was very impressed with my system.

It's in the Menu setting on iDrive - IIRC you go to Vehicle and Settings (sorry, without having it in front of me I forget the exact terminology/menu sequence) and once within you can set up Eco Pro, Sport and Sport Plus accordingly. Basically if you go into Sport and select Drivetrain it'll only engage the engine/gearbox map when you press Sport. You'll get the engine and gearbox highlighted in red on the diagram of the car. If you select Drivetrain and Chassis the suspension highlights in red too and that means when you hit Sport you get the dampers in the hard setting too.

Basically in the M135i I had it set up so it graduated from Comfort (everything normal) to Sport (Sport drivetrain/gearbox) and to Sport Plus (Sport drivetrain/gearbox, Sport dampers, DSC mid-setting).

But obviously you can mix and match to a certain extent.

Hope that makes some sort of sense!

Cheers,

Dan

So by your reckoning the 7 Series should have 7 doors or something?

It's not hard, as kambites explains well.

Isn't the coupe a 2 door?
