Lease deals are good at the moment, leasing an M5 is cheaper here than the USA, how long can that last?

How much is that upfront? Roughly Inc VAT £562.80 a month and £3376.80 up front so cost of ownership over 2 years so 16 odd grand.

I'm not saying it's a bad deal for what you're getting I just like to see the overall cost. With mine I was thinking @ 6K there were some fairly nice cars I could have and own outright and have some capital.

BMW pay road tax for both years so that makes it a bit better. Compared to a RS6 its a steal though or even a Panamera S, both of which approach £1k/month....

There is a PCP "offer" of 4.9% Apr on a 520d on BMW.co.uk which works out as only £30/month cheaper than the M5....

Man maths and 0-100mph in 8.5sec says M5 is the only option worth consdidering

Look out for the headline grabbing monthly payments with eye watering deposits. £5k above for the Audi sounds crazy.

I always try to work out the cost on a 3+23 so it's easier to compare.

I agree but what's the bork fund for a £6k M5 going to be like? Let alone a £15k RS6? £2k a year seems like a sensible minimum to budget for an M5 - so that's £4k.

At 22mpg an old M5 will work out at £5,400 over 20k in fuel; the new one should be about £1,200 cheaper at 28 mpg. Probably both sets of figures are a couple of mpg optimistic, but that actually favours the older one.

The older car probably won't depreciate by absolutely zero - 20% of purchase price is £1,200 again.

Add in two lots of tax (and assume that the M5 is an X-plate or older) and you have another £500.

So if *everything* goes well you're about £10k ahead on an old car. That's remarkably good to be honest... although I suspect with the RS6 the numbers would be about £10k in the newer car's favour.

Watching with interest. I have never leased a car before, but Lady F would like a car, and is not a confident second hand buyer, as I am, and she does not have my penchant for stuff that is a bit user-unfriendly/leftfield.

The Audi Allroad deal looks interesting - I need something with raised ground clearance and 4x4 capability for shooting and ski trips. I'm about to spend a ski season in France, and am taking the Defender. On my return, it may well be sold if a half-decent 4x4 can be found on lease for 300 a month or so...

More like £500 if you amortise the £5k deposit over the two year period. Still not horrible but I suspect you could do better.

Leasing *is* expensive but good deals tend to be less expensive than buying new or nearly new and chopping in after two years, which is the sort of illness I would otherwise suffer from.

They are all based on the resale value of the cars at the end of the lease. But if everyone leases, then second hand car demand will fall significantly and the prices will drop.

Having said that it seems to have been the way in America for years. Most car prices are quoted in terms of monthly cost.

No, it's mostly a combination of manufacturer support and finance.

Would have had had that at that price if I didn't need at least a hatch....

Is it possible with some digging to find out the cost of manufacturer of a particular model? There's no doubt still plenty of margin in there. In my case with the options I'll have paid 6k off a car that to but would have been 26k OTR, not a cat in hells chance it be worth anything close to 20k after a year let alone 2....

The only issue I have with these leasing deals is the mileage limit, the rate for 10k per annum is fine, but when you crank that up to 20 or 30k a year it's bloody horrific! I've got a company car at the moment as I do 40k+ a year, but if I change jobs to one where there's no car then I'm screwed as it goes from 3+23 of £220 a month to 6+23 at £450 month. Balls
