If anyone sees deals on E-class estates, any engine and any mileage, just shout...
Plenty of E Class Estate deals out there, all good value imo. https://www.contracthireandleasing.com/car-leasing...
And as an equivalent alternative, similar deals are available on 530d touring - ~£300 ex VAT on 6+23

I may be missing something, but why would you buy when you can lease for this money?

The Mercedes lists at £46,310, total lease costs over 2 years are £10k including VAT, even if you ignore finance costs and opportunity cost you've still got to sell for more than £36k for purchase to be cheaper.

Er - my point was exactly the same as yours - a 530d M Sport touring can be had on broadly comparable lease terms to the Merc. If I were in the market right now for a luxo diesel estate I'd be checking both out and seeing which I prefer the feel of. I wouldn't contemplate buying either in the face of these deals.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just making a follow on point.

This is good value IMO, the Mrs wants a car as we've shared one now for over a year, tempted.

But no one pays list. Orangewheels, as an example, has the Mercedes E CLASS E350 BlueTEC AMG Line Premium Plus 5dr 9G-Tronic Diesel Estate list price £46,511 availble to buy for £38,527

which therefore would still have to be worth at the very least £28527 at end year 2 to make it worth buying even at the discount price, and that's not quantifying the cost of tax and the hassle of selling, which both clearly disappear with a lease. Around £30k realistically then.

So would you hand over £38,527 of your own hard earned cash to buy, or would you lease for £287+VAT per month and send the thing back after 2 years?

You may have missed my earlier posts on this thread...

There is a leased E class estate on my drive right now: occupying the space that was previously home to a leased ML....

So you bought? I'm intrigued to know why, it makes no sense to me.

I'm the kind of person who would always buy outright rather than hire/rent/lease/finance) but tying up £40k ish and gambling on minimal depreciation, together with the hassle of selling or part exchanging when you want to change, seems a strange choice when the alternative is just £287+VAT per month.

What happens if you want one to keep for 5/8/10 years, and you want to be the only owner.
Or if you're feeling flush and getting one as a present for someone.
How does a poor credit history go down.
Or you want the baddest lowest pimped and bagged E350cdi (in metallic chicken gravy beige of course)
Many reasons to buy
Many reasons you can't lease.

Has anyone leased and then bought the car from the lease company? If so how was a purchase price agreed?

My neighbour leased an XF on a two year deal and then bought it off the company and although we didn't go into great detail he insinuated that purchase + lease costs combined were favourable to having bought new.

The lease broker through whom I've ordered a Golf R also stated that the lease companies were open to offers at the end of the lease.

I'm considering the 'what if you want to keep the car long term' arguement. I appreciation the lease companies are under no obligation to sell it to you but it must happen because their ultimate intention is surely to dispose of the car to the highest bidder.

You cannot buy the car from the lease co generally they go back into the AUC main dealer schemes which means they can control the residual prices better - it would be highly unlikely for you to be able to buy it / worth asking when the time comes as you never know but bank on having to give it back and wave goodbye
