Toasty, do you have the facility for 2 cars? In your OP, you said it going to be " mostly in town unfortunately". If that's the case, surely a 5K luxobarge (i.e a comfy place to sit with some toys to break up the boredom) and a 20K hardcore toy would be an idea?

At 25k I'd be in a Maserati Gransport all day long.

Ferrari engine, real carbon fibre interior that hasn't dated particularly, lovely looks, lovely noise and unlike the others on this list, rare, so it's an event everytime use it.

Runner up C63. I've got one. Great daily if you can afford the fuel.

I love this concluding paragraph from evo test of the c63 vs. e9x m3 saloon:

The depth of the M3’s talent, however, is telling. For point-to-point pace it easily matches the Merc but, more than that, it feels special doing it – accurate, agile, finely balanced, biddable – where the Merc is merely accomplished. In short, the M3 saloon is sharper, cuts deeper and will keep you hooked for longer.
Caranddriver:

'But the C63 isn’t one-dimensional. Even though this car leads with its engine, every part of the C63 is commendable; just make sure you never drive an M3 on a racetrack if you shell out for a C63'

People still read EVO?
So both mags have the m3 as a superior car?

Sorry just to clarify were you trying to reinforce my point or have a different angle?

No. Or yes. In The Caranddriver report the M car wins because it's cheaper, not superior.

Neither really, my point was more about the EVO style of writing. I prefer less obsequious roadtest reports. Incidentally the caranddriver review didn't really make the BMW the superior car in terms of driving enjoyment, the MB lost the clash by one point because it cost more to buy than the BMW. But it seemed a more objective kind of journalism.

I'm not sure how old the OP is, but no matter how good the Jag is, don't you feel that you have to be over 55 years old to get one - it's almost a precursor to retirement?
Course it is didums, only old people thinking about the retirement home would get into a 5 litre 0-60 in 4.6 seconds dated old V8 like this

OP, if you're still thinking of going down the GT route, have you considered a DB7? This one is in budget, has the V12, and is resplendent in BRG with tan leather: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

Beautiful though it is, it would take a braver man than I (or one with deeper pockets at least) to run a 12 year old AM V12 on a daily basis. I have similar, although slightly less, concerns about running a Maserati though I would love to have a Granturismo at some point in the future.

I know of one that was used for a 150 mile commute twice weekly without any unexpected issues over two years, so a bit of research may pleasantly surprise you (although you'll still end up getting very friendly with your local petrol station owner).

The C63 has been recommended a number of times, so thinking along those lines if a superb exhaust note with relative anonymity are your thing perhaps a V10 Audi S8 would do the trick? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...
Edit: Just re-read your requirement for "more fun factor that an e46" - perhaps an S8 doesn't quite fit the bill, but driving a Lambo-engined living room every day would still be its own kind of fun!

What about a really nice M6? Under budget but it's a lovely v10 and it's a get cruiser newer and save the rest of the money on maintenance and an exhaust smile

My cousin has an E60 M5 and the SMG gearbox isn't great around town.

I think the current XKR looks fantastic with the sports kit and have done since they came out - and I'm 30.

I bought the present shape XKR when i was 28 and still have it. Stunning car and plenty quick although the handling at times when puishing on are not the best.

Also, very reasonable to maintain even through main dealer. I value mine around 21k being a 2008 with 46k on the clock. So for around 25k you should be able to get a 2009 with less miles. Alot of car for the money!

In which year did they go from the 4.4 to the 5.0?

2009 XKR switched from 4.2 to 5.0 engines and updated the interior etc.

The 5.0 engine is magnificent! You won't quite get a 5.0 XKR in budget but the standard 5.0 XK is also lovely.

I had the 5.0 XKR with sports kit pegged as my potential next car, but the same engine in the F-type has now made me question it.

I think the look and sound of the car is fantastic, and I miss the power delivery of my old supercharged E55 AMG and would imagine this would be similar.

Jags do certainly have an older, more mature image, but certainly not 'old man' anymore. I don't think many 20 somethings would fail to be impressed with the look, sound and performance of an XKR!

I bought a 4.2 56 plate xkr this time last year, have done 11,000 miles in it. Mainly across scottish B roads, and absolutley love it. Its great on bumpy roads, will cruise at silly speeds without a sweat and has the brakes to stop if from said sill speed when required.
The sound is brilliant - Quiet when at low rpm but with a sly burble when ticking over, then as the revs rise over about 2.5k the burble becomes a growl and higher up the rev range the growl becomes a roar.
I had weighed up many other options both higher and lower in the price range and still think it was the Best car any 23 year old could buy for the money.

I ran one for nearly three years: An absolutely brilliant car but no real driving enjoyment at all. At least, not compared to the other cars the OP's considering.

So settle the argument for us. You're 23 and have an XKR - I'm guessing your friends are mainly in their 20s also?

Do they feel you chose an old mans car, or do they like it?
