Haven't driven it yet... it's on the list along with most of the highlands, the Isle of Man and the Ring whistle
You're ignoring the fantastic roads of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but that's OK; we want to keep them quiet.

Its only popular for hooning because of its proximity to populous areas. If it was in Wales it would be very average.
Very true in my view. It's not that great to drive though perhaps it's different on two wheels.

It used to be a great drive - I once got pulled over by a police car as I was heading down the hill to Macclesfield due to the amount of smoke pouring from the brakes of my ST170!

Not driven it for years as the cameras have spoiled the fun.

Skewed stats figures I'm afraid.

KSIs during the period between 06-2010 was like really really bad predominantly due to a massive influx of born again bikers who couldn't manage to stay on the road and which subsequently prompted the specs cameras. Since installation the KSI rate has significantly dropped but will take a while for the rolling year-in averages to reflect this.

So in answer to the OPs question, yes it is safer and that's a fact.

The Cat and Fiddle is a prime example of the actions of a few spoiling it for everyone. Play nicely and it would never have happened.

When I was 17 I used to go there in my Fiat 127 Sport on its 145/70 R13 remoulds.

Last month, I took a Cayman there. Guess which I enjoyed the most....

The average speed cameras are ridiculous. It makes overtaking on the straights a licence losing risk, so you have no option but to pass in the corners wink

In 2012 apparently 1,754 people were killed on Britain's roads. Meanwhile 3,377 people committed suicide. So may be doing away with all these road safety campaigns and letting people have fun might result in less deaths in total. biggrin

I commute from Worcester to Buxton 3days a week on average.

Cat and Fiddle is ok, but there are better roads up there with no camera's if you know where they are.

The 'average' speed cameras aren't what I'd call average either. They just take your speed passing two cameras, add them together and halve it. I wrongly assumed they took your average speed over the distance between the cameras. SAC for me frown

Is this true? Do 40 past one and 60 past the next and you have an 'average' of 50. Ignoring the time taken to drive between the two cameras?

Wouldn't suprise me, due to the 'shortcut' road that can be used, which would skew the figures of true average speed cams.

Well, I definitely did 60ish passing one camera, safe in the knowledge that even a driving god like me couldn't average 50 on that road, didn't check my speed passing the next camera, as I was concentrating on the road! NIP a few days later.

This was on the Cat-Wildboarclough section.

If it's true, it's great. crawl through both cameras at 5mph and then go as fast as you like on the hill...

Correct.....you can have fun on any road in a car of limited grip and power. Ahhhh...Fiat 127 Sport cloud9 I used to love mine back in 1980...my first proper sporty car biggrin
