Don't Laugh..

We are moving house to another town. The house is less than a mile away from the train station. I can walk that. No big deal.

However, we have a soon to be 1year old who is due to go nursery and the nursery is nextdoor to the train station and the wife also works and will travel from said train station.

So we need a car to take the the baby from nursery and back home and vice versa. Regardless, I will not have him being traipsed outside for 15-20 minutes in weather. So it must be a car...

So transport is needed. We currently have a Saab TTDi Sportwagon (DPF removed and EGR blanked out) which we use in our existing town. I bought it this March, new water pump, cambelt, DPF gutted, remapped, new tyres.

Great for baby duties

So what to do? Run the TTDi or buy summat else?

You will kill the car doing that all the time.

Buy a decent buggy and wrap him/her up warm and it will be fine. By the time you have got the baby into the car driven the distance and found a space got him/her back out of the car and got into the nursery you could of walked the distance. If you walk quickly you can walk a mile in under 10 minutes.

It'd be quicker to just carry or push the child then strap it in, get in the car etc.

Just keep it for trips to shop/park etc etc.

Be nice not to have to rely on a car for the commute

Need the "not sure if serious" picture. Buy the baby a blanket and walk.

Why not?

What will happen to the baby if he or she is exposed to weather?

You do know you can buy warm baby clothes, Tescos do some nice stuff at a good price. And some of it is even waterproof in case it rains.

Wrap up child, put in suitable wheeled object. Proceed by putting one foot in front of the other whilst pushing suitable wheeled object.

Nonsense. No matter how far your commute is, we still travel the same distance 'cold'. An engine won't magically heal itself after a few miles.

walk if its nice, taxi if it not. It's next to a train station, so there should be a taxi rank nearby? car seat carrier thingy away you go.

You do not need a car OP. Push the baby, enjoy some fresh air. Raincoat for the 15mins it will take.

Your little one will not spontaneously combust with cold or rain.

I've always chuckled at that statement too! That said, the battery may not last.

I imagine the exhaust might not be in a good state if it never gets any condensation burned off...

You'll need to use it in the cold and wet days but what 75% of the year your Mrs may well want to walk it.

Dare I say it keep the Saab but you could buy the cheapest Prius available or another electric car for the trip.

Or for the cost to change a car(even doing it in a petrol will do if no good) you could get taxi rides there and back for so many years - or what about a bus if you have a stop close enough.

One thing I have found or the wife has all these plans about having lots of time it turns out you don't. So lots of nappies needing changing or taking an age for breakfast or no sleep for the third week and counting but they are asleep so you let them sleep in a bit.

I cannot recall more than twice in the last few years where we have been on time for arrangements heck only once we have been early.... You may be lucky you might not.

This is why it takes everyone twice as long to get to work thanks to all the soft arse parents in their protective shell 4x4s dropping their little darlings off half a mile down the road. And also why all the kids are getting fat just like their lazy parents.

I would love to be able to walk the kids to school whatever the weather, but unfortunately the school is way too far away. Nanny does walk the kids to and from school two days a week as she is within a mile and does not drive. Having well wrapped up kids and a big coat usually stops her and the children from dying when it is raining or a bit cold.

The Finlandish people would be pissing their sides reading this thread. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21537988
