Sounds like you married the right woman!

If you do decide you need a car for some reason, fear of falling leaves or whatever excuse you can think of for needing a new car, then I think an electric one would be perfect for this.

You will kill the car doing that all the time.
Nonsense. No matter how far your commute is, we still travel the same distance 'cold'. An engine won't magically heal itself after a few miles.
I've always chuckled at that statement too! That said, the battery may not last.

Hmm, I have a 5 mile each way commute in my Turbo Diesel. If the turbo doesn't get a workout (I won't do that on a cold engine), then oil pools in the boost hose. The consequence of this for me was that the boost hose popped off (more like a fookin great bang actually) in the outside lane of the M1, taking my power levels from hot hatch to moped in about 0.5 of a second, and left me in limp home mode.

I made lots of involuntary noises that afternoon, but none of them was a chuckle.

I make a point of staying in 3rd for the last mile of my commute now, and take the long route home at least once a week.

I'd rather walk than go electric. Or die.

For the really cold days you'll need a "foot muff" which is like a sleeping bag for baby buggies. smile

No. I don't want to die. But I'd rather walk less than a mile than have an electric car.

yes

OP, listen to your wife and also, don't underestimate how much of a hassle it will be getting babies into and out of cars when the weather is st and the journey is so short. Save the car for when it's really wet. Cold won't be problem - they are a lot more resilient than new parents think.

You wouldn't be asking this question if it was about your second child. laugh

Pretty sure it was this one:

(Apologies for bringing memes on PH)

It's been pissing it down fairly consistently here, and I haven't even considered using the car for my 1 mile "commute". My only current question is if it's worth investing in a good umbrella (possibly-obvious revelation: Poundshop umbrellas are made of the weakest metal known to man. They'll crumble if hit by a vigorous fart). So, yeah, HTFU.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to get rid of the diesel Saab and buy something with a completely ridiculous engine with utterly ruinious fuel consumption given you'll not drive far enough to care how much it uses.
