The answer to this question is the same answer to other question's that come up from time to time .

Why do people cut the corner when turning right into a minor road .Why do people block junction's by not keeping to the centre line when emerging from a minor road when turning right .Why do people hog the middle lane . Why can't people signal properly at roundabout's etc.etc.

Basically , taking into consideration some point's already mentioned , such as loading the boot , good driver's reverse park ! Poor driver's drive in forward's .
It's never really occurred to me to reverse park. I commute by train so the only time I normally park is when I would want to put something in the boot of the car.

Not sure what to say !

I will say that on the odd occasion I have to visit a super market the " park forward " brigade , by the time they've shunted backward's and forward's a couple of time's and still left the car " squint " , take longer than the usual reverser !!

I drive a Ford Falcon Wagon for work and although it isn't enormous, I find it much easier to reverse into a space, it's just a little too long to turn into most spaces and end up straight.

If you can do it quickly, why not? Slow in, fast out works for me when it's time to get home from work!
This! smile And to be fair, I often find reversing into a space is an easier maneuver than going in forwards if there isn't much space to swing in.

Unless your car has rear wheel steering, the correct way to park is always by reversing in. If you park nose in and subsequently have people either side park very close to you it could be impossible for you to be able to get out, or would require a million point to turn. Whereas reversing in in the same scenario would only need say a 3 point turn to get out.
If I reversed into my drive I wouldn't be able to open my door, ergo reversing in is not always the correct way.

But if you drive in and reverse out, whats the difference in fuel used?
More manuvouring on a cold engine with fuel enrichment.

I was taught in the late 50's to reverse into a pub carpark slot as you might be too drunk to reverse out!

Bizarrely I always find it easier to reverse into a space. I don't know what the mechanics of this are but it feels much easier to fine adjust my car into a spot reversing than forwards. Possibly it's something to do with the front end swinging around? I used to drive a forklift and I assume that had the steering wheel at the back to make it easier to maneuver in a tight spot.

It's also much easier to drive out forwards. Better visibility etc. I do wonder if your car has a very long bonnet and a short rear if those would be easier to back out.

edit
and pulling out forwards quickly at the end of the day feels more intuitive.

Try driving straight into a space in a 5m long Jag XJ... I've yet to meet a car park (without angled spaces) that has a lane wide enough.... Reverse parking is the way forward (ha!).
(I also smugly feel like a better driver. (The same with reverse parking on a drive way))
I think it has something to do with the not being meant to reverse onto an A-Road...

Not if you have a kid in the car though - I drive forwards on to my drive so that access to the rear passenger door doesn't involve us walking carrying my daughter/her walking around the back of the car, near the road.

Before I had a kid I used to reverse on.

It ain't black and white smile
Heaven forbid that your daughter may be carried near the road! biggrin Seriously though, if you reverse in the rear is actually away from the road?

However I do sort of know what you mean, I usually reverse park but if the baby is in the car I drive in, in the way that will give me most space to unload him, usually at an end space on a row if no parent and child spaces are available.

It's much safer. There are no cars driving about in the parking bay but there is of course when you are trying to reverse out into the main car park roads.

So best to reverse into a space where you know it will not be occupied by a car trying to get past.

Visibility is much better when driving forward & therefore safer.

You should always reverse into your drive and pull out forwards. Especially important if you live on a main road.
