'kin 'ell !!!!! that would have drowned a unimog, let along a Paj. When I say flood, I mean stuff that would bother ordinary cars, so a foot deep of standing water for example. Matey should have carried on forwards..?DocArbathnot said:

Quite right. Completely pointless for most users most of the time. Popular with yummie mummies (who often can't park the things @ Waitrose) and the keep up with the Jonesies fashion victim kind of families.
Always an exception of course but I really don't see the point.
no stereotyping there then? Always an exception of course but I really don't see the point.

You don't need a SUV, you need a Volvo estate specced with steel wheels like mine. I've had Volvo's since 1986 with 15 inch 195/65 wheels fitted. Much more comfortable coupled to a nice soft suspension setup.
So true. Modern saloons' harsh ride is due to suspension and tyre choice. That said my Dad seems quite pleased with his X3... who am I to say he's wrong?

Matey should have carried on forwards..?Hate the things, when they are in front can't see past them so don't see the brake lights of the cars down the line. When they are behind let them past after I put the numbers from autocar brake tests into a spreadsheet and found they take on average 8% more distance to stop than my car, wet or dry. When trying to park in supermarkets don't park next to them as is too cramped and afraid they will open their doors on my car.
Have driven an M3 through floods last year and in snow last winter with right tyres and never found any problems. Don't see how the current 135 will need any changes whatever my driving needs, it goes like a rocket, is easy to get in and out of and has plenty of room . The final nail with SUV's for me is that I have found all the ones I get in X5,XC70 etc all have limited space. In short am completely bemused by the people who buy them and stunned any right thinking petrol head would ever even look at one.

Can't stand the things, personally; either to drive or to be around on the road.
I don't mind but they wouldn't be my first choice of transport. I wouldn't even have a full fat rangie if I knew I had the choice of a similarly priced. While some like the RR, some discos and things like the land cruiser amazon do offer good interior space, I find many don't really offer any more useful space inside than a decent hatchback. Audi seem to be criminal at this, the Q7 is an absolute boat, and yet it's like a reverse tardis.HertsBiker said:
This includes being able to cross a flooded road without hydraulic-ing the engine.
funny enough I think I have gone further through floods in a Citroen switched to higher ride height than the "SUV"s I have owned.HertsBiker said:
And of course, the ease of climbing in and out for us old gits has no small part in all this.?
this and headroom is the reason I have a "SUV" - I only sat in one in dealer after ruling other choices out and realised seating position seemed perfect for me as was getting in/out on days when back is playing up.Though since it was E83 X3, not sure it was best for potholed roads - though sometimes it surprised me (though I suspect that was when suspension didn't give so one wheel was in air above pothole)
there is nothing remotely PH about any form of SUV. Seeing SUV's of any sort being discussed on here in a positive light is like the day I heard Jimi Hendrix and Led Zep being played as muzac in a US supermarket. I decided then that civilization as we knew it was dead.
Mumsnet has a great discussion board about SUV's.

I don't personally like 4x4s, and I cannot see how I ever will. They're not sporty things...
Says the man who runs a 4x4 Navara Avemtura! FFS, has this thread attracted people with severe memory loss?
