they've been the cheapest on comparison sites too, so i'll likely be going with them. That and Diamond for girls weirdly... £650 is bloody good to say i'm on no accidents, 1 years ncb and 19, mine's slightly more than double that on quotes!

I use a 106 Rallye with the JP4 16v engine from a 307 as a daily. I do about 20 miles of back roads each day and love it.

Things to look for as others have said:

Rear beams - check if the wheels lean inwards/ have camber.
Rust - boot seams, front inner wings,
Engine mounts - occasional bolt snapping stories from 106oc & RallyeReg

The GTI is good, the Rallye I'd think will hold its value better over time.

I'm sure Baryonyx will be along soon with more advice! - He already posted!

ETA: I insured mine for £370 with commuting. 5yrs NCB. TPF&F.

link to the video? looks very nice, what exhaust are you running?

I was looking at a rallye initially, but I think I'd prefer some of the creature comforts the GTI has that the rallye is lacking, future classic and possible profit aside.

the rear axle issue is the only real thing that's worrying me, it's cropped up on a few sites and sounds like a £400 fix regardless of what you do.

I had a new 106 GTi back in the day. They handle amazingly well. Downsides are no AC and obviously compact inside. However the chances of finding a mint example now are close to zero. I recently drove a used example and it was an utter dog. You may have a very long search ahead!

Great cars, had one for 7 years. Daily, tracked and hardly modified.

The reasoning behind the £400 fix is a beam swap from IM Axles or similar company. They send you a refurbished beam and collect your old one. Although the price has dropped since I last looked: http://www.imaxle.co.uk/axles/106-gti-rallye

When something goes, ie stub pins. It is often easier instead of trying to get them out and replace them, to drop the whole thing off the car and replace all the tired things at once. The torsion bars often seize and can be a nightmare to get out.

Check the beam when you view the cars. Pull the top of the rear wheels towards you, if it moves or flexes then it will need attention at some point.

Make sure the beam is correct for the car, GTi's should have a 247mm disc beam, the car could have a drum beam if its been swapped with whatever was available at the time it needed doing. Not a huge problem but it may affect resale for purists.

I did Southampton - reading - Southampton every day for 18 months in a 106 gti, only time I found it uncomfortable was on hot days, sitting it coast bound traffic

During that time I had to replace the radiator and alternator and that was it

I spotted a bargain xantia and grabbed it because I thought it was a shame to put too many miles on the 106

I'm 5'11 and size 12 feet, never had any issues

My father is same height and he has size 9 feet and moaned about it, can't see how that worked.

Don't think I'd go back to a 106 for the above job now as I like diesels with cruise too much!

I got rid of it with around 140 on the clock, a friend purchased it from me

I can't moan about air con particularly when my fiesta doesn't have it, so that's fine. At least the rear axle is nice and easy to check as well, and £200 odd is much nicer sounding to fix than £400 biggrin

I can remember paying £11,500 for my Diablo red S2 13 years ago!

Utterly fabulous car, and along with my Focus RS mk1 one of the best cars I've had.

Really? I was told there was no room for it. Must be a non factory fit surely?

I paid similar for my new silver one (main dealer demo car with 2k miles). List was £13k I think. Very fond memories smile

Great little things
No point looking for one based on low mileage you will probably end up with a clocked one as there are so few genuine sub 100k miles ones left. Buy one with full history and a good recent history ideally with the common jobs sorted in which case mileage is irrelevant.
Rebuilt rear beam
Recent Cambelt
Recent front suspension
Proof of a clutch change at some point
Check gearbox bearings are not noisy

Sadly 106 Gti / Saxo Vts were one of the last true hot hatch pocket rockets and not many good ones left.
Avoid cheap after market exhausts, suspension and wheels.

Bloody hell - mine was also main dealer demo with similar miles!

Mate, just do it! I had one as my firs car for 2 years then the same one again for another year. Excellent fun, competent as a daily and not too bad as a crusiser.
They are so cheap to run and care for you would be mad not to. If you find a good example and look after you wont lose much, if any, money on it.
When you want to take a car by the scruff of the neck down a back road, nothing much will come close in the real world in terms of sheer pleasure than a 106 GTi.

I miss mine terribly and may well look to get one as a toy if I can find the extra cash.

GET IT BOUGHT!

Sure - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYFdohuho14

Not sure what exhaust that was, it was a Scorpion/Pugsport if I remember correctly. I had a supersprint on my Saxo VTS and that sounded much more awesome smile

Please also look at Saxo VTS' - they will likely be cheaper, but are as nice if not nicer. The seats in a standard Mk2 Saxo VTS are nothing short of awesome. Typical Citroen velour comfort. Much prefer them to the half leather/leathers in the GTI.

Great cars. My wife sold hers nearly two years ago after owning it for 6.5 years. It was the couple of long trips down to Cornwall toward the end of that time that made us fall out of love with it. I think it's the sort of car you could put up with regular motorway journeys while in your early 20s or younger then begin to get fed up!
