I’d say it’s a good thing. Another Manufacturer in the sport – albeit a customer programme in one of the ‘lesser’ classes. They maybe the No1 car manufacturer, but they were badly burned by the F1 programme – and even now only occasionally run 2 cars in the WEC series. They are being careful about spending money. When they are ready, and conditions allow – I’m sure they’ll be back.

If the FiA really wanted to generate huge interest – they’d have a WRC with a 50:50 split between Tarmac/Gravel-snow……the lighter more powerful RWD cars would dominate on Tar, but stuggle on the loose, and viceversa with the heavier 4WD cars on gravel. But that’s far too sensible.

Whilst this is a welcome addition and without trying to be the party pooper, this isn't really going to do anything against the opposition.

Nice to watch (at the back of the field) if nothing else.

Saviour of WRC? No chance!!
A bold assertion given in the Era of Grp B the Lancia 037 won a few events over the 4WD cars.

Castrol livery plus the boxer engine popping and banging, that would be a sight.

A road going 037 is my euromillions win car, absolutely stunning looking machines.

And I suspect they've aged better than the turbo machines - better throttle response being supercharged. Agreed though, lovely things.

037 is MR, GT86 is FR.

Roughly, competitiveness on loose surfaces goes like this:
4wd
'engine over driven wheels' (ie FF, MR or RR)
FR

It's great news, but I can't see how they could be competitive. If anything it feels more like a proof of concept that will hopefully lead to an 'FR-only' class in rallying.

It should be noted that this is indeed for an RWD class of rallying!

Group R3, in fact: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_R

Well its more to do with that the R3 class...is 2WD only! So the GT86 will have a good a chance as any.

It isn't the top of the class, so it wont be up against 4wd cars like the Polo R, it will be up against similar spec cars, not the turbo charged s2000 derivatives that the top chaps are in.

So its good news that a rwd car is in it for some variety.

Its any 2wd R3, not just RWD.

R-GT was meant to be rwd only, but never fully formed which is a shame, as that would have brought some cool cars back into rallying.

The only bad news is the one year wait to get the cars on the road. I had some happy times with Mk 1 and Mk 2 Escorts and the Capri - when you could get remould M&S stage tyres for 15 quid each :-) I am thinking that the GT86 possibly offers a higher level of sophistication

Mark Higgins hosted a BRZ customer event in the Isle of Mann.

A New Zealand outfit called Possum Motorsport have all the bits you need for your WRC BRZ;

Soooo...there is massive potential for both cars, GT86 and BRZ, to do their rallying heritage some real justice.

Does not compute! confused

On another note, did Lotus ever race that Exige S rally car, or was the project still-born?

The Renault Clio R3 runs 250hp, no reason why the GT86 won't have a power gain, with TMG themselves saying "..TMG engineers will modify the base car to the maximum level permitted within the regulations."

So if the engine is going to be modified, I wonder if any of those parts will end up being available to Joe Blogg on the street? Would be silly not to, having spent all that money developing the bits in the first place.

If you ignore the PH waffle and check TMG's own press release;

"The car, which will be known as the TMG GT86 CS-R3, will be built according to R3 regulations, meaning it will have a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited slip differential, modified engine, adapted brakes and other upgrades.

Drawing on the experience of developing the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car for the Nürburgring-based VLN series, TMG engineers will modify the base car to the maximum level permitted within the regulations."

http://www.toyota-motorsport.com/en/latest-informa...

That engine will be modified...and I'm guessing to 250hp. smile

Well I for one would take an interest again if there were plenty of 2 (rear) wheel drive cars in the field. It is not all about the outright pace, it is about watching something exciting. The lower formulas using front wheel drive hatches are like watching paint dry. The WRC cars are also sterile, they just seem to nail the throttle to the floor and go up and down the sequential box with barely a change in pitch. I do watch a bit of historic rallying on TV and the old Escorts, Sunbeams and 911's offer a far greater spectacle.
