I am keen to get to know my latest beastie (a C63 AMG) in a safe environment and in the past have enjoyed excellent value days with Carlimits. Unfortunately, Andy Walsh the owner and chief instructor, has badly broken his shoulder and is out of action. Does anyone know a company offering something similar? Ie pay £25 and hoon about around cones on a large expanse of tarmac with nothing to hit...

At this time of year you'll get an airfield track day for around £100.

Thanks, but I'm not after a track day. That presents the risk of other people bashing into me and most operators will black flag anyone who drives sideways. The beauty of the Carlimits days was that they set up little relatively low speed courses which you drove around one at a time and gave you the chance to learn your car's behaviour at the limit. Any other ideas?

Try a track day at Curborough. One car at a time on track, and you can do what you like regarding skids and sideways antics. "Skylinecrazy" on here organises a monthly day there - see www.facebook.com/sprintandtrackday. Cost about £60 when I went in the summer.

Thanks that sounds ideal, at least it would if I didn't live on the south coast! Does anyone know of any similar venues in the south? I'm based in the New Forest near Southampton.

I'd be interested as well. Somewhere in the south too!

I do like car limits activity days but find they involve quite a lot of waiting around. The options are a full instruction day (but @ car limits they do not seem available weekends anymore) or 'something else' and the example above sounds good.

Similar to the off road pay and 'play' area type thing - would be great if someone with an expanse of tarmac, maybe some cones, area, ideally low grippish area and say allow cars to book 15 minute time slots ?

I have done a wet grip thing at rockingham but again a lot of waiting around...

Another option that's just come to mind, is to hire the runway at Bruntingthorpe. I read somewhere it costs in the region of £50ph, but if you're playing non-stop you'll get through tyres VERY quickly in the dry, so one hour is plenty. Again, it's a fair trek from the south coast though (Leicestershire).
