Leon 20vt?

0-60 7.7s
Top speed 143mph
Power 180bhp

Potential for over 200bhp with a simple remap, alloys and a twin tail pipe are the only giveaways...surely qualifies as a sleeper?

Mine looks just like a 318d but can hang on to many a Porsche but it's still a Q car, not a sleeper!
I reckon far more people know what an M5 is than know two tailpipes equals 335i/d.

It's a lovely motor your M5 but it's not a sleeper!
M5s used to be subtle.

286bhp. Certainly a lot quicker than it looks (imvho).

to 99.999999999999% of the population it is a 5 series touring rep mobile. Until you give it the loud pedal and hear the V10 howl and then use launch control to paint some perfect 11's.
Thread title is not "sleeper" or "Q Car". It's cars that are quicker than they look. V10 M5s ARE quicker than they look. Most people don't expect Lambo speed from a Labrador carrier, even a BMW one.

Yes anoraks know the visual differences between a 520d M Sport and an M5 and the stats. But how many have actually felt the vast difference in performance between the two? It's wholly disproportionate to the relative mild visual uplift.

Same with XJR and 3.2. To Joe Public, yes both are a big Jag. But there's little real grasp of the stark performance difference between the two. A Daimler Super V8 is funnier still.

May get flamed for this, but hey ho....

One is a pretty good, sensible diesel. The other is a not so sensible, rather rapid petrol. A fair bit quicker than looks suggest.

Gorgeous thing. 3.3 or 4.6?

EYA: chrome bumper trim says 4.6 I think.

thumbup

Even as a fan of many years' standing, I wasn't aware the 3.2 made it into the E39. Lovely rare beast. Def needs a 523i badge. hehe

Kidding, for those who can't read tone.

So little power from such a large engine!
50 odd bhp/litre in 1958? That isn't too shabby at all actually.
Yes, but those will be SAE Gross horsepower, won't they, rather than the SAE Net figures we use now?

That means it'll be more like 250bhp, and ca. 35 hp/l, in today's terms.

But even the slowest 5 Series is likely faster than Average Jo's hatchback, in fact the slowest 5 Series stands a pretty good chance of being faster than the vast majority of every day vehicles you see on the road. So you'd have to be pretty dim to not think an expensive looking new BMW isn't going to be fast.

A sleeper would be something like a 1990's Citreon Xantia but with enough power to level peg with your pseudo supercar.

So this http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/bmw/bmw-5-series-5... is faster than the majority of everyday vehicles you see on the road?

Somebody obviously shat in your sandwich yesterday, hopefully you are more happy today.

By fast if you mean 6s os less to 60 then almost any german saloon/hatchback that has the biggest engine you can get without it being a 'sports' model. So anything with 3-5 litres that's a standard model line. Especially since a lot of slower cars look like faster cars. Mk1 Mazda 3 MPS as well without the optional bodykit. Also V6 engined Vauxhall/Ford saloons that aren't the sports model.

Mazda 6 MPS. Easy 300bhp with a few mods, 4WD, looks like a repmobile.

8.1 seconds is easily faster than the majority of cars on the road.

Quantify it then, not just with a throwaway statement.

Definitely.

I know all about them and I still mistook one for a standard model, tried to pass it in my wifes Freelander and was left very very far behind.
