New baby = New car
Discussion
I'd echo the wait or if you are changing the car because you are due a change (PCP or lease end date) then go for something 5 door with a highish roof and a big boot, wet weather and collapsing then dismantling the travel system wears thin quick. We managed the first 9 months with a 3 door but it gets old and hard work swinging a heavy baby seat in and onto the base, also regularly dropping the front seat and putting the seat in can be hard on the mechanism you don't want the wire snapping or coming loose meaning the seat doesn't move easily from the one handle. We now have a Mazda 2 and a Seat Ibiza st - which may have slightly too low a roof but is brilliant otherwise the travel system fits easily and I can get my MTB in if I remove the front wheel.
Hmm I have a Golf sized Leon FR and have a new born and it is absolutely fine day to day. I have a roof box for longer trips away but must confess we over packed (she's only 7 weeks so we've only been away once) and I hate having luggage in the passenger areas.
If you're not doing long tips you'll be fine with the M3 and Auris.
If not a Golf Tdi as suggested and keep M3 are easily big enough.
In fact I want to buy an E46 M3 coupe for day tips.

We now have the "travel system" which is basically the buggy. We picked up a bugaboo chameleon 3. The thing is massive. It's so big it doesn't quite fit into the boot of the merc which is a surprise, but it does fit in the back of the M3, albeit with all wheels off.
Tonight I've just got off the phone with the old man. When I was born I was taken home from hospital on my mothers lap in a Spitfire. He then sold this to buy a family car, a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. To be honest I wish he kept that. Then, once my brother was born he replaced the talbot with a family car a Jag XJS as the boot was bigger.
I think I've been worrying about this too much, as most people have said you just cope and deal with it. Saying that I don't think we're anywhere near deciding on a car, but it has been cathartic to get some advice.

When my little horror was born, 15 years ago, I owned a Morgan 4/4 and an Opel GT. My wife had a Peugeot 106 Rallye, so we did not have a 'sensible' car.
The Opel was sold and I ended up with a Vectra Estate. As a baby buggy it was great: as a car it was a nightmare, sold back to the dealer 10 years later when ABS pump went mad.
Little horror preferred the Morgan, (which we still have), and shed a tear when the 106 Rallye was replaced with a Beetle Cabriolet.

Hi brown bottle, which evo did you have? To be honest it was on the list(mine), but was talked out of it by a friend who had a 7. Nothing major, just small niggles that the dealer couldn't resolve.
It was an 8. If I was looking now I would go for a 9, it's the same car but with some improvements to the engine etc. plus it means you can get the newest car of that model range (7/8/9). Robertos88 said:

We have the same pram, the carrycot(not collapsed) and stroller fit in a mk6 golf boot with changing bag and my football kit no problem with the wheels on. Removing and fitting the wheels will be a massive arse ache.Have another go with the pram under the the carrycot, it will fit I assure you, but agree it's a big buggy.
FWIW, a golf is plenty big enough for us - we manage a week's shopping, baby in car seat with buggy and carry cot no problem.
Just want to thank everyone for all their help. It's been tricky, but we've decided on and paid a deposit on a.... Audi S3 Saloon. Specs and price TBC. I got a fantastic deal on the M3 as part ex. I will miss that car a lot, despite all of the negative jibes I've taken for it over the years.
Btw, I was very, very close on looking at the EVO.

I bought a Z4M
haha me too- it arrived the day after she was born!Incidentally OP, we've got by with the 1 series, but it's a bit tight for all the kit that you need if going away for the weekend. It's workable, but you have to plan your boot space carefully or purchase a roof box. If doing it again, I'd have opted for a 335d touring.
