Ever wondered what data is being collected by your isurance company if you offer to take their black box in car recorder?

This is the list of stats recorded (we've done some work with this data hence I've seen the list of whats recorded).

Speed by time of day by speed limit
Maximum speed by time of day by speed limit
Driving time by time of day by speed limit
Location at 1 minute intervals
Avg speed at 1 minute intervals
Time over speed limit by time of day by speed limit
Harsh braking by time of day by speed limit
Harsh acceleration by time of day by speed limit
Any data transmitted from Engine Management System at 1 minute intervals

I think my premium would go through the roof if I had one of these fitted!

They should have a winners table at the end of the year.

Don't think I will be opting for a black box.

Never would I voluntarily have one of these fitted to my car, never.

Wow, that's a lot more, and in a lot more detail than I thought. Shocking.

Looking at the way government has acted over the last fifteen years, I'm bordering on convinced that this will eventually become compulsory. After all, why wouldn't you want it if you had nothing to hide/think of the children, etc. Plus we already have google cars which can drive themselves and will doubtless in future improve into mega safe drivers with a 99.9% record.

In the end, driving your own car will be attacked as a crazy and unnecessary risk in the same way that skydiving and rock climbing are today.

Wow. I woke up in a great mood this Saturday! biggrin

Do they check engine running time?

No Yaw measurements then?

Might be worth fitting to the transit, it won't go over the speed limit, I don't brake hard and its engine management system doesn't exist, the only naughty I do in it is powerslide round roundabouts, but that isn't measured apparently...

I was thinking that too, they missed a trick, also no recording of the sound of poor tortured tyres!

Also: do they have an internal battery? I presume that the speed inputs from the OBD2 port are intended to prevent successful GPS jamming?

I'd like to them try to fit one to my 50 year old Riley!

I looked at it with trying to insure a 17 year old as a named driver on a mini cooper, and decided that the T&C's were stupidly tight, and the definition of 'good driving' ill defined.

I thought that my driving, (aged 46) would cause them to cancel the policy mid term.

The sad thing is, in a few years it will be out of most peoples price range not to have one.

Same here. I'll only have one in my car if there's no alternative.

Getting rear-ended by a lorry because you couldn't afford the premium hikes to accelerate into the gap that was available in front of it, probably.

That's what scares me. I suspect the folks signing up to black boxes are mostly going to be young and therefore likely to be driving cheap in insure small capacity cars. The baseline data developed for "good" drivers could have a very low bar for "harsh acceleration" if it gets rolled out to a wider demographic.

Never mind if they ever make it to bikes!

They will never make it to bikes - at least not to be adopted by anyone other than the bearded BMW GS rider crowd.

What worries me is if this ridiculous sort of insurance became mainstream, people would dither more and drive even slower than they already do.

What are the trigger points for 'harsh acceleration' and 'harsh braking'?
