I would imagine that the 944 would be significantly quicker. It will also chirp the rears in third gear on a dry road (and easily spin up 255s in 2nd, for that matter).

Hmm, wouldn't be so sure on that. Chirping the rears is irrelevant because I mentioned cornering, not power. Some of the modern hatches corner quicker than some very quick old metal, I think you may be surprised by how close it'd be.

I thought this would be a question about the metric sizes fitted to metro's. Was it 165/65/305 ? (about 12 and 3/4 inch diameter?)

Didn't Evo (?) run a feature on that no so long ago - showing how recent mid tier hatches were as quick or quicker than relative recent high performance/supercars?

I recall the Clio did particularly well, even in some of the mid-speed stuff as it gave more immediate confidence on roads?

Perhaps. I think you might be surprised how able the 944/968 is.

If you say so.

My 745i running 40 profile tyres on 19 inch wheels and the ride quality is lovely and they don't look daft. So why am I a muppet for using what the car left the factory with?
My Focus RS runs 225/40/18's as standard.

I always found the E92 320d particularly good for this.

CHEAP ROAD TAX!! HIGH MPGZ!!!! Cheap to run ecomobile with low monthly payments.

(But don't mention the fact that 4 new RFT's from the cheapest online supplier come in at over a THOUSAND POUNDS for those snazzy 19 inch wheels everyone specs)
definitely this

I'm not sure the ultimate driving machine is quite the same with 4 'Event' ditchfinders on it

A pea roast from this Thread here -

http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I just saw a brand new a7 tdi black edition in our car park at work. I thought the wheels looked MASSIVE. I just checked the audi website and still cant believe it - they're 21 inch. Web pic from searching...

Camskill price for 275 30 21 Conti specific tyres for Audis are £263 each.

The most I've had was 18" on my previous S3. That was a bit harsh. I personally feel even the 17" alloys I currently have are still too large considering the state of our roads. I may replace them with 16" alloys on deeper walled tyres.

yes The wife's Octavia has got 18s for the summer tyres and 16s for the winter (with the same width and overall rolling diameter tyres) and it handles vastly better on the 16s.

I think 225 width is probably rather OTT for a family hatchback, too; I suspect ideal would be something like 195/65R16.

The one thing I loved about my older Alfas was the 15" alloys meant it rode very well on crappy roads. The whole HotWheels look is getting a tad over done and tired now. Form over function is tiresome.

What a silly statement my M3's and 911 have all had profiles of 30 or 35 not super cars but still rode well, the number is a ratio to tyre width so a 30 profile on the 911's 295 width tyre is not ribbon thin.

I run my road car on the manufacturers standard tyre sizes. They are 40 profile at the front and 35 profile at the rear. I'd be grateful for any advice you might have which would stop me from being a 'muppet'.
Indeed. The STANDARD rear tyres on my car are 245/40 R17. The side wall is 98mm.

As the profile is just a percentage of the section, you can have some pretty reasonable side walls with a 40 (or 35) profile if the section is quite large. Who's a muppet again?

ETA: Seems I'm not the only one to point out the profile is just a ratio.
