PS. I love the fact that many of those working on this awesome project are from a similar era to me.

IN51GHT, forgive my ignorance, but how does it steer? I can see the rack linked to the uprights, are you relying on the flex in the wishbone bushes to allow a few degrees of steering angle?

Great idea,
Just bought one for my Nephew, very confusing about the XXXX'S, I still filled in the fields with his home address rather than xx's as I couldn't see workout how I would get the certificate. Not sure where the cert goes, him or me via my paypal details.

The certificate is apparently emailed to whatever email address you used.

At least I hope so, I've just bought one for the old man for xmas.

MASSIVE spherical bearings in the ends of the wishbones.

How easy (or not) is it to get a look around this project in person or as part of a group?

I would expect a donation is required but do you have to be a (dubious) 'celeb' to get an invite.

I know you have been doing presentations at events but there is nothing like looking at the real thing.

Paul
I'm no celeb and I've been to see it, as have a number of others here!

Not quite sure of the process as I got invited by a friend as part of the local RNLI, but certainly very accessible.

Excuse my ignorance but is the stuff explosive and require tools unlikely to create sparks or transmit static?

Rocket fuel must have been part of a chemistry lesson I missed at school.

Paul
If it's something you're interested in learning more about, there's a brilliant book called Ignition! by John Clark which can be found online: http://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/ig...

Clark was a US chemist working on rocketry and wrote his book in the late '60s. It's very readable (ie not a text book although there is a fair bit of chemistry in there) even for a lay audience. HTP is an interesting fuel although it's actually been quite unpopular outside of the UK.

If you want a shorter description of how Bloodhound's hybrid rocket works and why they're using HTP and rubber, have a look at the bottom of of the first page here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/03/bloodhound-...

Max_Torque said:
The hybrid rocket system uses a specific catalyst to cause the HTHP to dis-associate into it's seperate molecules, a process that also releases a lot of heat energy, warming up the oxygen stream, and helping light the solid (polymer) fuel in the rockets combustion chamber
In this case, it's a platinum mesh screen that the the HTP flows over before hitting the rubber.

Yes you are correct, got the pdf cert this morning (very nice), now trying to get it colour printed and framed.

It's a nickel mesh that's been silver plated.

The rougher the plating the better as the roughness results in higher surface area. During use the plating effectively gets polished by the HTP passing through it, thereby reducing it's efficiency, I believe we think 2-3 firings per cat pack will be possible before the efficiency loss becomes too great, but this will be confirmed in the first quarter of next year when we do car system rocket tests at NAMMO.

I stand corrected (again!) In fairness I'm pretty sure Ron Ayers told me it was Pt earlier this year but perhaps I misremembered.

I assume the interseal drain port is linked to somewhere nice and safe to dump the leaking HTHP in case of a seal failure??

Glad to see the great UK Christmas shut down doesn't include Bloodhound.
