IN5IGHT - Talk of boats and planes without wings above, leads me to wondering.

How much of a 'car' is the Bloodhound? By that I mean - as it travels at speed, how much of its mass is borne by its wheels - presumably lift is something you are trying to avoid!

It the overall angle of thrust designed to push into the ground? Do you use the aerodynamics to push down or just keep it straight? Is this controlled actively/does it change throughout the run - as the car has to perform across such a massive range of speeds?
We aim to have zero overall lift through the run profile.

The winglets will enable us to trim the lift out should we need to. We hope to be able to have the winglets at a fixed angle, but if required we'll actuate them hydraulically to a speed lookup table. we'll not however have them in a closed loop control system using wheel loads or similar as an input as this add another level of complexity to an already complex machine.

The wheels them selves will "plane" at around 400mph, in the same way a speed boat does.

With the heat from the wheels, How much do you expect the wheels to expand?

Ron Ayers addresses a lot of those concerns in this piece: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/03/bloodhound-...

(excuse the shameless self-linking but I spent an amazing hour on the phone with him nerding out about LSRs and Bloodhound)

There's also a video on the wheels specifically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_ImAm1WhcY&ab...

I'd love to be involved in some of Guy Martins stuff as it's genuinely interesting.
I know his agent (who is also a massive petrolhead, with a decent collection of toys), if you'd like me to put you in touch?

At the risk of sounding like a massive knobber that would be great, even if it was just a case of showing guy around our car, I'm sure many hours could be wasted chewing the fat.

No problem, it may take me a little while as I don't see him that often, despite us living in neighbouring villages. Leave it with me.

Bloodhound (or at least a model of it) visited my daughters school today. She couldn't wait to tell me about this car 'that's more like a rocket and will go over 1000 miles an hour!' smile

Bloodhound Diary: Super-track for supercar

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-3791...

A British team is developing a car that will be capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h). Powered by a rocket bolted to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine, the vehicle will first mount an assault on the world land speed record (763mph; 1,228km/h). Bloodhound should start running on Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape, South Africa, in 2017.

With just one year - 365 days - to go until we'll be running Bloodhound SSC on the desert in South Africa, work continues to get the Car ready.

This seemed like a perfect time to inspect our desert track in South Africa, and to take a moment to celebrate the amazing achievement of the team which has prepared the best straight-line race track ever.

Continues...............

The last few weeks have been concentrated on a redesign (to simplify) of the jet fuel system, it's one of the areas of the car I have inherited due to the reduced headcount in the engineering design team. Last night we finally managed to get the first of four tank bladders installed, finished up at 8pm last night.

Just a heads up for anybody who may be interested.

We are starting hire out our board room for events as 75% of the time it sits there vacant & it's a asset we should be using to help fund the project.

We can offer light refreshment, or if you prefer a decent buffet lunch.

We have already had a couple of booking for car clubs.

If anybody is interested drop me a PM & I'll pass your details on.
