I read in Ricahrd Noble's book that Andy Green thought SSC's performance was starting to level off dramatically the other side of Mach 1, and that had what, 45,000 lbs of thrust or so?
Can't say i'd want to estimate the transonic drag profile for a car! Pretty complex, with the underside shockwave propogation / reflection i imagine?Vocal Minority said:

Don't forget, that's static thrust, not thrust at mach 1. something like a j79 with a low bypass ratio will loose less thrust at high speed than something with a higher bypass ratio...Vocal Minority said:
At the risk of getting bked for putting this on the home team's turf - Breedlove is planning a new Spirit of America - though at 77 won't be driving it himself I am sure people will be suprised to know.

Only an engineering drawing at the moment though, so Bloodhound may well have stuck the record out of their reach by the time they are ready to do something.
Sorry for the thread drift, but this seemed the sensible place to put it!
Looks dramatic. Seems as if they've forgotten that someone has to sit in it and drive it. Unless it's just got a tiny camera for forward vision !!!!!http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2014/06/05/crai...

Rubber tyres? No matter how thin and solid, it makes me wonder just what calculations they have done regarding wheel loads at 1000 MPH. The design seems to owe most to Mr Breedlove's feel and judgement rather than engineering design, FEA, CFD and all the rest. I'm sure he knows his onions, but at >M1.0 that's not really sufficient.
The author of the article doesn't seem to know just how far into the development process Bloodhound now is. Someone should point them in this direction!
