No one will look back but plenty may wonder what kind of car they could hire.

In the OP's case, what would depreciation + tax + bork on a 2003 SL350 look like over the same age and mileage?

£2k depreciation (just from going retail to trade or private sale), £500 of tax, and £150/month of bork works out at £6k, which has to be a best case scenario. If the new car does 30 mpg vs. 25 mpg (made up figures) that's another £800 over 20k.

The total cost of this deal is £9,700 at £280 + VAT.

If it's affordable and it's broadly the kind of car, mileage and length of ownership that the OP would go for anyway then I'd absolutely sign up for it.

I certainly can't see it costing more over two years than the leggy Range Rover.

As an educated guess the discount would be higher than 15%. That's ignoring the fact the MB are really selling the vehicle to themselves...
