Here's an interesting scenario: you pay monthly by direct debit every 1st of the month. You take a long holiday, your DD gets rejected by the bank for any reason while your'e away. You come back just to find that car clamped or towed away and few weeks' bill, I'm pretty sure its double figures per day + towing fee + untaxed vehicle fine on top of that.
yes but its modern and convenient and therefore brilliant and a step forward. It doesn't matter about little things like that.

If on a Police car they will turn round and stop you. If caught by an "unmanned" camera you'll simply get a fine through the post. It's just a dumb computer linking reg nr to VED database to your address ...

TX.
Why the need for ANPR at all? Why don't they just send out fines to all addresses where there's a car registered with no VED?

I say don't change what isn't broken.
I know it's the modern way to go digital but is it really necessary.
Call me cynical but it smells like a tax on the poor. Why 5% more for DD ?

For all those who think this change is a bad idea, I presume you think we should have an insurance disc, and an MOT disc as well?

You pay 10% more for 6 months now ...... so will be saving 5% if paying by DD ...

And more to the point, I pay for my tax up front and in one go, why the fk shouldn't I get a discount compared to someone that drags it out over a whole year costing the taxpayer more money?

You do, it's 4.76% cheaper for you paying up front than paying over the following 12 months.

Is it? I've seen numerous cars clamped over the last few years as they were spotted parked without a valid tax disc.

Databases rely on the car being seen to be checked by the Police.

Whilst I agree that the paper disc is out dated, this is by no means a perfect solution.
Indeed - i fear the law of un intended consequences will be strong on this one.

That's my point, I'm playing Devils Advocate for those who think it's wrong that there is any charge for spreading the cost over a whole year wink

The yokels round here who only go between their birth village and the next village 4 miles away twice a week are going to love this.

How come? The tax disc is barely used an enforcement tool today anyway, it's all done by database and ANPR. So what will change?

So next year I can keep my old tax disc on display even though I've now paid on new system.

Would displaying an out of date tax disc be illegal?

Village nosey parker will not look and report and there are no anpr in the sticks so no real need to buy tax at all, oh, no police patrols due to staff shortages and the fact that my area is very rural.

I forsee a lot of cars just being used with no tax or mot now you don't need to buy a disc the MOT is not so likely to be done.

The country is not all motorways and streetlights, ANPR and Police cars. quite a lot is very rural.

Not sure that will work I guess if you don't SORN or re tax you'll get a fine and demand for payment from the computer.

Damn there's me thinking they'd used my idea to scrap VED and stick 5p a litre on fuel. Then I can own several cars and only pay tax when I actually use them. It's pants that someone with a seat ibiza ecomotion can clock up 50k in a year and pay £25 , or is it free? Whilst if I want to take my xtrail to the dump a few times a year a family holiday and a few winter days I get charged £240 to do 2000 miles. A***!

If they did do that then the same rules might apply in that a low C02 car would be cheaper to drive as they would be charged per mile on a lower tarif.

I assume these people don't currently bother with insurance either other than for the one month they need it to tax the car?

who knows ?

All I am saying is that once one part of the holy trinity (tax, mot, insurance) becomes easy to avoid the knock on might be that they all magically become ignorable.
