I dont know of a way around this apart from buy and sell the car at midnight at the end of the month.
The amount is too small for individuals to worry about on a sale transaction, and risk high if you try to pretend it all happened at month end etc.

Anybody know how you pay by direct debit? I've been on the DVLA site as we have 2 cars out of tax today.

Are you presented with the option as part of the application process?

Apparently, direct debit payments are only available for those whose tax runs out on or after 31.10.2014.

The option to pay by DD doesn't start until 1st November.

So if the refund is only processed when DVLA accepts and has processed your paperwork, you could lose two months tax if they carry their processing time into the next month.

A very brief survey on my bike ride in this morning revealed one car in the office car park without a disc, and possibly another on the road but I couldn't be sure. To be honest, I can't decide if this comes down to a lack of information, or the usual apathy from the general public regarding matters of motoring.
Both my cars expire in Feb '15.

Do I have to remove the discs now?

I have also read that even if my VED isn't due I still have to register my cars online or face a fine, is this true?

If it can be purchased immediately (like they say) then surely you must be able to stop it straight away, if you have to wait approval that rolls into another month then that is atrocious! I can understand having to cancel it a day or two before the month is out, ie not at 11:59 on the last day of the month.

No, you don't have to remove the disc now or ever. You also no longer have to display them.

Secondly, if you have a current disc you are already in the records so no need to buy or register anything online. I can see all sorts of dodgy websites popping up to rip people off that aren't up to speed with the system though.

I took mine off today, only have the works disc in now
