So:

  • No paper disc - Cautious yay
  • Direct Debit - yay
  • Monthly DD to cost 5% more? - WTF?
So, we remove all the faffing about with paper and they want to charge us more for collecting it in the manner that most businesses prefer and indeed offer discounts for?

Such an old fashioned system, glad to see it going.

It was only a few years ago when, having had to buy tax at an actual PO instead of online, they refused me as my insurance cert was printed at home. The logic of that baffles me to this day.

So what happens when i'm buying a car/bike from a dealer? How do i know whether it's got tax remaining? Presumably check on the internet.

And if i buy a bike from a dealer and they tax it for me i've then got to double-check that they've taxed it before i collect it. Hopefully in this scenario there'll be a printable receipt so that the dealer can prove that the vehicle has been taxed before collection.

About time, I've always taxed my vehicles, but have frequently forgotten to actually display a disc....even being pulled for a chat about my progress the office didn't even notice it, only serves a receipt of tax in reality in case the DB is not working right.

Nice bit of direct debit action.

"This year your tax is going up by just £10 a month". Its only £10, no biggy.

And repeat. £15 a month extra this year as you have a PH worthy car.

Only £15 extra a month. Still cheaper than Sky.

Until we get to the same situation as petrol, when it changed from Gallons to Litres. Small increment here, small incremeent there. But charge by the gallon and those small increments were bloomin' huge...

All those celelebrating being able to go out in the winter etc it will be down to the small print I bet they will still be doing 6 month and 12 month it's just it may be easier to buy 6 months tax then cancel it after a month.
Even if you take out 6 months (which is considerably more per month than 12 months)
when you "cash" it in after a month they only pay you back 5/12ths of the amount and not 1/6 of the original!!!!

Lose Lose situation as always for the Motorist!!!

So more vehicle numberplate recognition cameras so the govt can ensure everyone is paying but of course villans now will only have to pay for a set of plates and not a forged tax disc as well?

Call me paranoid, but this could be very useful to those who want to stop someone being mobile. A quick side of the road of the check because 'database says no' and no more car (because insurance will also be invalid)...
Isn't no tax a civil offence, and hence just warrants a fine? Only a lack of insurance and / or MOT is criminal, and would stop you from being able to drive any further?

I may be wrong...
But no tax invalidates your insurance so you aren't insured either.

I agree with the posts about adding the tax to fuel instead.
Surely the current trump about VED is to regulate/tax less efficient (read more fun) cars however it isn't very fair, a 5l RS6 doing 1000 miles a year would surely pollute less than a 1.6 astra doing 20,000 a year?

And the paperless system would throw up numerous problems, ye you could have an invoice but that doesn't mean some cheeky seller hasnt cashed it back in and you are none the wiser.
If its a downloadable invoice then it just adds one extra step to everything if you ask me.

I'm sure the whole electronic/wireless/super-duper-year-3000 thing works better in theory but change is rarely for the better, this is coming from someone who is 21 and this sort of system is aimed at, but i would still find it easier to pop to the local post office (they still exist! wink )pay my cash and forget about it.

The tax should be added to fuel but that is too simple.
I've been saying the same for years. Fair and virtually free to implement.

Am I right in saying this sweeping change will only save the Government £7m a year? How many years will it take to cover the costs of bringing in the new system then?

Seems there are better areas that the Chancellor could be aiming his beady eye over. Yes a paper disc is analogue in a digital world but the system worked.

I too am wondering about the ins and outs when you buy or sell a car or you have paid the full annual amount in a lump sum then 3 months later sell your car. does the new owner when they change the V5 to their name have the tax you paid for transferred over to them or do they need to arrnage their own payment and will you get a 9 month tax refund ?

It was quite a nice way to make a few extra quid if you bought a car that you wanted to break that had some tax left on it - you could SORN and get the unused months refunded with a nice cheque from the DVLA/DVLC.

finally, i see that this new system will be open to even greater abuse by those that are inclined to disregard the running of a car on the road legally.
many in old knackers will almost certainly think sod it no tax disc needs to be displayed (dont they do it now anyway) - i'll run the risk of having my £200 nissan micra taken off me and crushed, no need to sweat. the system doesnt seem to be geared towards ensuring that those who avoid paying their share continue to avoid it unless the computer systems sends out fines to those car owners who have a car in their name but are showing as no record of taxing it?

I've always liked peering at the tax discs at Sunday Services of Breakfast Clubs- easiest way to spot some replicas!
Me too!

Overheard two people chatting about a Cobra outside a pub and they were peering at the body trying to work out whether ally or grp etc and I pointed them at kit car manufacturer's name on tax disc.

So now decent citizens can't report a car on the street with out of date tax and police can't clock that the disc is the wrong colour and do something about it there and then.

And they do notice that, I had an untaxed company car once and drove past a police officer on a motorbike chatting to his mate and he still saw it at 40mph and jumped on, chased and pulled me.

Seems sensible to keep it visible to me

You have, they really do not walk along the street checking for out of date tax,
Actually they do, that is the job of the fake police (PCSOs) as I have been left notes on my windscreen about not having a front plate / no tax disc visible when parked on my driveway.

You don't have to do it via Direct Debit as I understand it though? You can still just pay for 6 months or a year up front.

I've NEVER displayed a tax disc on any of my motorbikes since having one stolen off my '82 350LC back in 1995
