for some reason, these have never really made it onto my radar ... I do disagree that its modern looking, I would say it has a very distinct look that is settled somewhere in the early 90's but def not modern, that's not to say its not a looker though.

def got some fair size stones to justify the purchase and consider it as a winter commuter motor ... well done that man!

Having spent some time behind the wheel of my friends 928 S4, I have to say that I walked away from the experience rather disappointed. Though I guess on reflection it was a hell of a car given it's age. Amazing, distinctive looks given the age of the thing but otherwise I found it quite an underwhelming experience. The fuel economy is hard to swallow given that similar performance can now be obtained in hot hatches, and the potential for a wallet destroying experience would be an ever present worry.

For anyone considering one, I know that he swears by a chap called Paul Anderson who's a 928 specialist based down in Stroud - he knows the cars inside out!

I toyed with the idea of chopping my MKIII Supra in for one of these a good few years ago.

Always fancied one but the service book full of expensive stuff made me realise that they weren't very forgiving on the wallet.

I kept the Supra and that nearly bankrupted me instead.

i had a S1 for a year.... to big for the roads round my way...but great on motorways etc....remember coming back from a ski trip in france...all good and then doing a 3 figure speed on the m25 in sleety conditions it aquaplaned and just went from the outside lane onto the hard shoulder before i could react...my girlfriend looked up from her magazine around a mile later and said ..."I prefer it when you drive in the slow lane...whats the rush to get home".... never went above 6O for the rest of the journey,,
horrendous fuel costs...and the fear factor at mot time wasnt good for my health so i sold it in the spring and bought an elise....another car thats makes driving an extreme sport in the cold\wet.
not sure but is the glovebox airconditioned in the 928 ...i remember i had a car that kept my sarnies cool....sure it was the porsche

Great scene, I had one the same as in the film (colour/interior) which was originally owned by Jack Tordoff JCT owner.

Great cars, under-rated and good examples are surely going to be more sought after soon.

I have owned my 1990 S4 for the last 7 years and I love it !
You certainly don't buy these cars to get great fuel economy but if you want to turn the key and hear that unmistakable V8 burble you would be hard pushed to find another car that could match it. Look after it and you should have years of driving pleasure ahead. All automatic cars should have the driveshaft flex plate checked every service.

To answer a couple of questions above: Exhaust - it's a standard exhaust with just the rear silencer replaced with the rear muffler bypass. It doesn't give any noteable power increase but opens up the exhaust note nicely. X-Pipes work better on cat cars (mine is non-cat) but for the money I won't see more than a 10bhp gain for my £400+ investment which on a 320bhp car, won't be noticeable.
Tyre Pressure sensors - assume not working but didn't ask the seller! Even on new press cars these were unreliable so will happily do without as 135mph on my daily commute won't be happening! I assume that having non-standard alloys and tyres may be the reason why.
Bills - yes squirreling away the kids college fund in case something big lets go, but hoping I bought well as plenty of history with the car and a fastidious previous owner gives confidence!

You can't compare a 928 to a modern hot hatch. If you want point to point bang for buck, you'll buy a Scooby and pretend it looks nice.
Owning an driving a 928 is about so much more than speed. These cars were £50k new in the 1980's which equates to well over a £100k now. I waft around in mine and let people in their Golf R32's welly it past me. Get it on the right road (a big well surfaced one) and it still kicks like a mule though. Paul Anderson did the last belt/pump change on mine for a previous owner but Stroud is too far away for me.

Great write up. I always liked the 928. I can sympathise with the worry about 1980's gizmo's breaking. I have a Renault Alpine GTA Turbo from 1988. It has electronic fuel guage, speedo, trip, doors openers, door locks, ecu, cooling fans, brakes etc. Currently one door won't open (new mech on my desk) and the fuel guage is a work of fiction. Plus at 70 mph the speedo under reads by 10 mph (they all do that)

Oh - I totally understand that and I don't normally treat car buying / owning decisions in such a black & white way. As you say, they certainly do still go very well when you get on the loud pedal and you aren't going to get that kind of noise out of a Seat Leon Cupra and I fully accept there are numerous other reasons to own one!

Fantastic cars and hats off for taking the plunge. I was seriously looking at these 18 months or so ago but kept missing the 'right' looking ones before stumbling across my current '02 Boxster S during the search. I still look at these & think I might one day - which is more than I can say for the Maserati 3200GT I was seriously considering buying before I saw the frankly terrifying set of bills the previous owner had to stump up for !

I think the biggest difference is how usable the power is compared to modern cars, and in a supercar designed in the 1970's the answer us 'not very often'! Makes it all the more special when you can though!

Lovely looking cars as well. Another brave man. Even braver as your car was nailed together in France! I applaud you sir!

Nice one Rafe.

This is what I posted on Rennlist almost two years ago:

I bought my 928 on 16th Jan 02, ten years ago today, since then I've done about 73,000 miles in ten countries.

I reckon I've spent about £20k on fuel, £6k on insurance, £1.5k on tax, £2k on tyres, and perhaps £6k on parts and other consumables.

I've driven on 14 tracks, including several trips to the Ring.

I don't think it has depreciated much from the £5k purchase price, and it runs better now then any time since I bought it.

And best of all I've made lots of good friends - Cheers Guys!



I do still have my 928, but now it gets used almost exclusively as an intercontinental holiday touring car, as at 225k miles it seemed cruel to continue tracking it (still does 337bhp at SRR though, even at that mileage).

I will always associate this car with Taito's 80's arcade classic "Chase HQ" (I really wanted to be Raymond Broady) - that being said, it has definitely a case of "never meet your childhood heroes" for me personally; I lived with one on loan from a good friend for a weekend a while back and whilst he does actually take care of his example I was distinctly underwhelmed; and I thought my car liked a drink...!

'Tis a braver man than me who runs this car today.
