RE: Audi A3 Cabriolet: Review
Discussion
Just as some Audi drivers seem to live up the stereotypical image of Audi drivers, so do to many of the Audi haters do their best to conform to the stereotype of being ignorant, intolerant and arrogant.
How about letting people who enjoy having an Audi just get on with it? No one's forcing you to buy it or like it.

And thus we see in subject A, another textbook demonstration of the mindset that simply must have that new Audi, much the same as he must have a new Louis Vuitton manbag or some other such trinket that says to the other fellows in his department and his friends and acquaintances, "look everyone, notice that I'm doing rather well for myself and I downright crave recognition for it. Do tell me that you're all ever so envious."discodeek said:
looking at your profile mate you own a 94 plate MR-2.....yer hardly Harris or Clarkson !
Yes mate okay mate do you even mate, mate? I don't fully understand. I am neither of those people. Ah, I see, they are the vicarious avatars of your boyish fantasies so of course i'd also dream of living up to this.Delusional belief that everybody that questions your taste or doesn't have something as expensive as you have must be fraught with envy - check

It's all about what you've got isn't it chaps? Keeping up with the Kardashians, etc. Don't get your Calvin Kleins in too much of a twist though, I'm sure neither of you are image conscious in the slightest.
Like many people who do alright for themselves but nowhere near super-rich levels of wealth, I do not feel the need to display my wealth on my person or on my driveway. Some people, especially on Pistonheads, see a value in cars which aren't worth very much in monetary terms but have something else to offer instead.
Many on Pistonheads would prefer to buy something fun rather than something - anything - with the latest number plate to show all everyone how much money you've borrowed.
Audis are especially prone to some chopper playing the jealousy card. I've had it myself previously. Anyone who, for whatever reason, just doesn't like Audis is accused of being jealous and the usual references to the cars listed in the PH Garage are used as conclusive proof of envy.
Of course, the PH Garage is not a comprehensive appraisal of someone's wealth or spending power. It may not list all of a member's cars. It doesn't list their home, it's value and whether it's mortgaged, wholly owned or rented. It doesn't list gross and net income, nor indeed investments. Hell it doesn't even list where people have other expensive toys such as boats and aeroplanes.
Finance deals nowadays are so competitive and drawn out over time that pretty much anyone in full-time work who runs anything reasonably modern could have a financed Audi sat on their driveway, if that was there mentality. Most newish Audis cruzin' about aren't owned - they're financed. Most of those are just financed by people who want a newish premium brand car that's easy to drive. Some of the rest are financed by delusional fknuts who think that other people are impressed with their credit rating. Most of those fknuts have friends even thicker who actually are impressed.
It makes one chuckle...
Considerably Richer Than You, I drive a Audi (in white)

So you would like to think, its the way fashion trends work, Audi are very much in fashion and we all like to conform / be accepted on some level, from the clothes we wear and the cars we drive its all influenced by something. How about letting people who enjoy having an Audi just get on with it? It's funny that Audi get bashed so much for this but companies like BMW and Mercedes don't. I suppose its their connection and platform sharing with VW but ultimately, for what 95% of people buy them for, Audis are just as good as their competitors.
Agree with your points above. No idea why Audi gets such a rough ride compared to BMW and Merc.Even the platform sharing thing is a pretty limited criticism these days. Only the A1 and A3 share platforms with VW group cars. Admittedly the bigger cars share engines and other bits.
Ignoring the R8/Gallardo platform sharing, as the Gallardo is out of production now

Coudn't agree more! How about letting people who enjoy having an Audi just get on with it? No one's forcing you to buy it or like it.
I have no idea why some choose to slate or ridicule something that belongs to/bought by, someone else. If you don't like something (or what it stands for in your eyes), don't buy it, simples.
There's loads and loads of cars out there I wouldn't consider for a large variety of reasons, do I get bent out of shape when I see someone else in one? No, I don't give a monkey, it's not my money and everyone is free to do with their's as they please, end of.
The constant need by some to come out and perpetuatly slate bemuses me, life's too short!

I think you are correct, but only for specific types, not everyone is influenced by cars or cloths. Can I also ask something? Why do folks say 'Audi's are very much in fashion'? Sure, there's many more on the roads than ever before, but the last time I looked, BMW and Merc still sell more cars in the UK, so, are therefore far more common and more 'in fashion', No?
Same when you look at a used car search on Autotrader, there's thousands more BMW's for sale than even Merc, which in turn, there's also more than Audi.
So by definition, where is this percieved popularity, certainly over the other big 2 German manufacturers coming from?
On the subject of this one, not my cup of tea but for what it is (a small premium soft top) It's not offensive to me any more than any other of it's type.
Oh god, here we go again…the wheels are too big…..it's an audi……lets have an argument.
My wife drives an A4 and she had an A3 before that. Both very capable, fast, comfortable cars. Lovely to sit in and to drive. I'm not a fan of the Audi understeer but you have to be properly hooning it for it to become an issue.
Neither of her cars were financed and we couldn't give a st what the neighbours think (she is 93 and gets the bus). We bought them because they really are very nice cars to drive with the added security for her of the quattro system.
Yes I suspect this car will probably be bought by a certain type of person but surprisingly it is aimed at a target market. Audis have become so ubiquitous because they are bloody good cars. That is what makes them desirable.

Unless you're a bit sad, you spend more time inside your car than outside it looking at it. Audi make among the most attractive dashboards and interiors, so what is so wrong about people buying them for this reason, rather than worrying that their car is based on a shared platform or not the ultimate in on-the-edge handling? Maybe they're not the ones being pretentious...

Audi make some great cars ...... and some of them look good.
This one doesn't ...... unless you value travelling in something that looks like a stylised bathtub.
It is possible to make an attractive looking small(ish) convertible.
Audi just doesn't seem to have the formula ... and never have.

No not really, you seem to have missed my point entirely. You're still projecting your own insecurities onto me. Without me singling you out, you took my initial post personally and still won't take ownership of your own feelings. In the grand scheme of things we're just talking about Audis. A menstruation joke? Already? You're working from the assumption that I would be offended by you telling me what car I drive and then telling me that it means I don't measure up to some popular motoring journalists in some unspecified way. I can only assume is something akin to a McCoys advert where because I don't drive something new and expensive, a big tube will suddenly appear and remove me from your version of PH. I think your version of PH would be something akin to the business card scene from American Psycho.
Come on, chaps, all this handbag-waving has left important PH pedantry undone.

No you couldn't. The 125i has a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo, much the same as the overwhelming majority of BMW road car engines currently being built.

The 125i convertible (E88) and coupé (E82) were always based on the "old" 1-Series (E87) and actually has a naturally-aspirated, 3.0-litre, 218BHP straight six (the new car will be called a 2-Series Convertible when it arrives). In the review, Sean Carson said:

What with all the Audi bashing and only comparing it with the current (old) BMW cabriolet we have overlooked every other rival in the £30,000 4 seat cabriolet market.
So I put it to those who say an Audi is simply dull/expensive/fashion item/badge engineered and only bought by those who are "keeping up with the Jones" have you considered the new Vauxhall Cascada, you know the £30,000 1.6 turbo powered Vauxhall which supposedly rides better than the Audi but suffers from a woeful interior (but no one really cares about those do they??) or are you still badge snobs but only when it suits?
For what it's worth the Cascada was described as a million times better than a Megance CC....
