Hi good people of Pistonheads,

I'm after some advice as to what may happen after my van was hit by a possible un-insured driver frown

Last wednesday afternoon I was working at a customers house, at aroud 3.15 there was a loud bang and the customer came in seconds later to say someone had hit my van, I went out to see my van (A Citeron Relay) had been hit on the drivers side by an 1996 Impreza estate, which was now some way further up the road, at this poit 4 lads (approx mid 20's) got out the Impreza and started to walk away. I started walking towards them and they started to jog (Whilst laughing!!!) so I chased them down an alley and into some gardens. At this point I had a reality check as to what would actually happen if I caught them and went back to my van.

The damage to the van has caused it to be a write off and was removed by the police, and has now gone to the insurance company.

The police attended, and told me the car showed insurance, but was in a different name to the registered keeper, I did'nt think this was allowed???

The traffic officer who delt with me at the scene also said "We know this car, but it is usually driven well" now at the time I did'nt think much to this but, thinking about it now it seems an odd thing to say?

I informed my insurance within an hour of the crash. they passed me to a rental company to sort a replacement van. They contacted me the next morning, they told me that they had found 3 insurance policy's on the Impreza, one only a few weeks old which is the one they are pursuing, but suprise suprise they can not get in contact with the insured via phone so are sending a letter.

So all this leaves me with no van, and no idea of what will happen as my insurance wont do anything till they know who was driving, and if they are insured frown

Any input would be appreciated,

Thanks

Its a very unfortunate situation that you find yourself to be in, but there is a shining light.

The MIB (Motor Insurance Bearau) have an untraced driver agreement, which I assume this will fall under, as the driver will most likely not own up.

I'm the insured driver on my wife's car, she is the registered keeper (I agree, this is routine and nowhere near the world of pain you potentially face frown ).

I suspect that Insurance Companies might object to random people being insured on a vehicle if they are not the RK of that vehicle - but as long as the Ins Co have been told the situation and agreed to insure the particular driver on that vehicle (which might include loading the premium wink ) then that is legit thumbup .

I have heard of this, not sure how it works, I hope it's the same as claiming off his insurance, but suspect it is not frown

I can cope without the van for now, but by new year I need one

I am sure that the MIB will only act if the OP is not covered on his own insurance i.e. Third Party cover. If he is Comprehensive I believe they will just direct him to his own insurers.....I await to be corrected....
