I want to go into bat with herindoors over her hideous Pug807 – with the perfect result being her compliance with my (and for that read “combined wisdom from here") suggestion for an alternative.

Her needs are:
1. 7 seats. (with seats 6&7 being suitable for a currently 12yr old + 3years replacement cycle)
2. Easy to park – supermarket, school run, coffee shop etc.
3. Not horrendous on fuel.
4. Loads of EuroEncaps.

But.. what she really needs but neither recognises she needs, nor will admit :

5. Something with a bit of style and performance.
6. A cavernous boot for when (most of the time) seats 6&7 are not in use.
7. Something that I would be prepared to be seen in, and can drive for prolonged periods of time ( the hideous Pugthing is the most uncomfortable car I ever drove), as importantly this unlocks options as to what I can have next time I change mine.

If we said absolute absolute max budget of £12-15k assuming zero value on the tradein. Fuel consumption not massively important (10,000 miles pa) ditto VED or even Insurance

I did , some months ago, suggest WE go look at an XC90 , but she went without me but with the kids and placed 6’4” 16yr old in seat 6 and declared Volvo’s as “too small” – I think this was an unfair test so its not “out of the game” , but I will have work to do to get her to revisit that.

Any suggestions?
Personally, I think she'd be better off with a 5seater estate, but the specification of 7 appears immovable despite my protestations that its only to either a) move other people's kids about or b) comes with such a premium that on the rare occasion we need it, we take 2 cars.

This one is a real struggle, I'm not sure it actually exists.

No idea what they're like, just the quickest kid wagon I could think of.

Surprised she didn't like it... My 13 year old son fits in the xc90 perfectly and it's very spacious, it's very easy to drive aswell

Accept your fate, its a Ford Galaxy, Renault Espace, VW Sharan or a Grand Voyager.

Your budget wont stretch to anything "Stylish", would avoid older/leggier SUV's as they tend to have more to go wrong and generally they arent seven proper seats.

We have the Galaxy, should get shut as we hardly use (2k this year) it but it is really useful, stuck my MTB in it, wheels on and went out, dragged a Christmas tree back in it, great for tip runs etc.

I looked at SUVs and I had to admit to myself that the 20k budget I had wasnt enough and I was only getting one out of vanity, no need for 4wd, there is a lot of snobbery about MPVs, they are not cool in any way, but neither to be honest are most SUVs, they are nicer but are mostly overkill for our usage.

Had a similar dilemma 8 years ago. I spent a small fortune and bought this....

Every conceivable extra, 7 seats, 5.0 V8 massively quick. It was up for sale a few months ago for only 5k.
Don't know what would do it for me nowadays though.

Edit: If you're worried about economy go with LPG

Put your pre-conceptions away

Much better made than earlier versions and 2.0 diesel is more refined and also more reliable than the 1.9, and is chain driven, that saves a major headache down the line.

While they are not made for speed they will easily keep up with traffic, and cruise at 90+ I used to get 38mpg out of ours no matter what I did to it.

Latest shape Galaxy or Sharan fit the bill but are a little on the large side.

We had one of these, just the 3.2 but it was a bit of a dollop I thought, woeful economy, pretty badly made and not really any fun, got rid of it fairly quickly. These arent really stylish now, just look like a bit of an old woofer. We part exed it against a new Sharan at the time, 40 mpg vs 18 mpg was a big factor. Can only imagine most of these will be screwed now, neighbour has a late one, a diesel and he is chasing rust all the time, wouldn't recommend.

Citroen C Crosser / Mitsubishi Outlander thing comes in 7 seat variety and isn't the worst car in the world.

Dare I say is, the Qashqai 7 seater is cheap enough and quite comfortable.

Bit older, but always quite liked the Mitsubishi Grandis.

Otherwise, XC90, Disco, etc.

getmecoat I know I'm in the minority but I miss my old barge.... I love the shape, the new one is horrible. The 3.2 was the pre-facelift car too.

Ford S max all day long

The Titanium X Sport comes with skirts, big wheels and lots of kit. Easily within your budget:

Diesle

or if you feel brave the 2.0 turbo petrol, essentially the new Focus ST engine but slightly detuned
