Real world mpg of 2 litre petrol turbos

Steer clear of petrol turbo's, best bet is a 6 cylinder petrol. A 3 series 3.0 petrol is a truly lovely engine. Plenty of MPG and the sweetest in line 6 sounds ever.
Strange that today I have bought a 200SX to replace my dull as ditch water 330 that I get 21mpg from (no it isn't broken, nor fast, nor sweet).V88Dicky said:

Why have 2 litres and four pots when you can have two extra cylinders and 1000cc extra?
Above are the figures for a current BMW 335i
Highly impressive, nay witchcraft.
Over all the cars I have had I have found that the quoted urban figure is what I usually get as an average, the current quoted figures are further out than they even used to be as manufacturers set up cars to do well on the automated test procedure.Urban mpg 27.2 mpg

Current Leon FR 2.0 turbo petrol with the DSG on a mix of single carriagway A road, bit of dual carriagway and some town work is averaging 29 MPG. It gets driven quite hard at times but not stupidly so. Have found that trying to take it easy, which seems a bit stupid having purchased it as reasonably quick daily drive, only adds about 2 or 3 MPG so really not worth the effort.

You have summed up the problem with the car industry in a sentence. The vast majority of cars are simply white goods and the vast majority of the public & press seem to think that's acceptable.
It's a 3 litre RWD "Sport" - exciting to drive, should be the No.1 target

But I feel we do have to remember that "fun" or "exciting" are purely subjective feelings when in a car and as such it can be hard for companies to correctly produce a car that meets everyones fun criteria.
Some people derive their pleasure from speed, some from drifting, others from extreme grip through corners and some just like the sound and feel and as always its comparative to what you have been in before.
That said my E46 330i is a much more "exciting drive" than all my previous cars and the majority of my mates motors (corsas, passats and diesel A3s etc.
However the most "exciting" car I have been in is an old British Leyland Mini clubman estate with a 1.3 Metro engine in it.
10 plate S-MAX 2.0 Ecoboost, 203bhp, 6 speed powershift DSG. Around town, very low 20's. Long m'way cruise at good but not silly speeds, mid 30's. 1,000 holiday miles with family of 5, loaded to the roof and a roofbox, 28 point something (all figs off the computer).
Same engine and box in a Mondeo would work well - it has to work quite hard in an S-MAX, it's a big old bus.

Blimey! I thought these modern cars would do better than that. I have an old '98 E36 with a 2.5 N/A engine and my figures are about the same, except the 250 per tank would be for city driving/short hops only.250 miles per £75.00 tank mixture of town and busy dual carriageway driving

Similar fuel consumption despite approximately 30% more weight and power.

My RS Megane 265 has averaged 26 - 27 mpg over the last 3000 miles, the vast majority is motorway commuting. I think if I eased back a bit I might scrape it above 30 mpg! A long way from the official figures from Renault!
I get about 27-28 mpg in mine, mixed rural/town/dual carriageway driving. Longer runs sticking at a speed that won't bother plod/cameras will see about 30-31mpg.
Driving like a nun at 50mph in 6th will see about 33mpg.
In comparison, I got 35+mpg was possible in a MR2 while hooning and easily attainable in a FN2 CTR without much effort.
A bit crap tbh but the boost is fun
