Hello to all the pistonheads !

And Happy New Year, full of burnt fuel, squeaking tires, overheating brakes and other nice things.
First of all, please accept my apologies for any mistreatment of the English language, but I'm French. Yes, a true one, frog eater... I live in a region that many Brits know: the Dordogne, near Bergerac.
I discovered this website and the forum by looking for an info about one of my cars: a 1992 Lotus Omega (N° 0644F). At 48, I decided to allow me some automotive pleasure and that's how I now own:
- the Lotus;
- a 1991 Mazda MX-5 NA;
- a very modern 2011 VW Scirocco R.

I bought the Lotus because it is kind of a memory from my young years. I was already very grown up when my godfather had 3 of them (not at the same time...). And it is the car that left him the best memory (although he now owns a F599GTB, after a 550 and a 575). He wanted to keep one, but it was stolen and totally destroyed after being used for a burglary. And when i told him that I bought one, in Decembre, he was quite like a young man again.
My wanting of the Mazda comes back from the time I was kind of a car journalist. Mazda France lent me a bright red one for a whole week, in 1991 or 1992. This little car, overly fun to drive stayed in my mind since then. So, I looked for - and found - the same red MX-5.
The Scirocco R DSG is my second one, after a very nice 1.4 TSi 160 DSG. I just wanted something a little more thrilling. And, I must say that it is a LOT more thrilling... Just the noise when you hit the throttle... It growls and keeps growling till the red line in a seem-to-be endless acceleration. The truck before you? Well, it's already way behind you...

Back to the Lotus, I must say that it is an amazing car. Even in french, I have difficulties to describe the immense pleasure, the huge thrill it gives me.

By the way, my question was the following: is the oil used for the gearbox really an engine oil?

Cheers to all of you,

Hervé

Blimey your English is pretty impressive!

Might be popping your way this Summer - another month in our camper planned (we did N Spain, SW France and the Ardeche/Provence last Summer for five weeks). More time to polish up my French...

Bienvenue à têtes de piston!

Can you tell us more about the Lotus Omega/Carlton? I've always been tempted, are parts hard to find?

Vladimir, thank you for your compliment about my English. I love that smile. You did the SW of France but not the Dordogne???? Tsssss... Well, the fact is that you have many things to see when you come in Périgord. Châteaux everywhere in the river Dordogne valley between Bergerac and Sarlat. And many many other sites.

The axe, thank you for the French words smile. About the parts, I don't really know yet as I just bought it. But, I needed to change the ignition system: spark plugs, air filter and the ignition wires. The first two were no problem to find, and I used eBay for the third. Actually I bought them from England, at Formula Power (formulapower.com). But, I'm afraid it may become a little more difficult for some parts, as only 950 LC/LO were produced. Fortunately, many parts can be found in the UK, includingfor the body kit. But at what price? Well, I will try not to need some...

Hello Pvapour!
We are neighbours! I would gladly meet you somewhere to show you, and take you for a drive. Have you ever heard of the "Chevaliers de l'arbre à cames" monthly meetings? They are held every first Sunday of the month. So, the next one will be this Sunday on the parking lot of the Leclerc La Cavaille on the road to Bordeaux. I will be there around 10:30, tomorrow. With the Lotus, of course. In case you come, I will wear a red baseball cap.
See you tomorrow?
Cheers

Hervé

Bonne Année Hervé

Your English is very good, much better than my French unfortunately. I live in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, right on the border of 16 and 17, not far from you.

I have checked all the information available to me and can't find any mention of gear oil for the Lotus, (Autodata doesn't even list them). I really can't see them using engine oil in a gearbox of that age, that sort of era things were still using oils like EP80.

If you need any help sourcing things from the UK drop me a PM, I have been in the motor trade in the UK most of my life if I can help I will.

Crossy, thank you very much for your message. Actually, the recommanded oil seems to be a Castrol RS (now Edge Sport) 10W60 which appears to be an engine oil. Strange, isn't it? And, as I intend to change it (as long as the diff, the brakes, the engine and the coolant), I prefer to be sure...
But, all the infos I found (thank you Internet) say that it is this Castrol oil...

Fixed.

Herve, a random question, which will either make sense to you, or not.

Do you know Derek Brown?

Hi Herve

I will be in Champagnolles with my Cobra Replica from June 16th to 26th. Do you know of any car meets during that time.

I am interested in talking to other car owners regarding registration of UK cars and the French Car scene in general.

Sorry but I can't help with your technical query though !

Cheers
Paul

Gforceq, does your question refers to the French accent mimic? If yes, I would write:
I am rrreeding zisse weeze a Franche accent

If you live in the South or SW:
I ameu reedingueu weezeu a Frencheu accenteu

Yes, I know Derek Brown, not personaly, but what he did with the Michelin Guide.

Bonjour!
isn't the g'box an old Corvette unit? in which case maybe they used basic oil? does seem strange, and i'm sure a synthetic upgrade would be beneficial.
Maybe ask Opie Oilman - it's a pinned thread on top of the forum list.
meilleurs salutations,

The gearbox uses the same internals as the Corvette ZR1 - 90s version so this may help you:
