Looking for some winter tyres to leave on all year long
Had a look at "tyre leader" and found a few candidates. However got a large unexpected bill arrived from the taxman so price is now a big concern.

Car 2005 Vectra C Estate, diesel and used mainly for commuting down dual carriageways, A roads and B roads. Live in NE Scotland so snow is a definite possibility.
Looking for decent grip, reasonable longevity (had an evergreen tyre, grip was ace but it went down to the wear bars in <13K miles on the front)

So bearing in mind the above

Anyone know if any of the following are any good?

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/westlake/sw6... (hmm bit loud)

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/westlake/sw6...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/zeta/antarct...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/pace/antarct... (same as the zetas by the looks of things)

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/tristar/snow...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/goodride/sw6... (same as the westlakes me thinks)

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/cooper/weath... (Coopers but...2011 manufacture date which makes me wonder how long they will last before perishing and how their grip compares to newer compounds)

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/nokian/wrd3/... (would like these but more money amd price is a big concern at the moment till this bill gets dealt with)

What would anyone here go for? (other suggestions welcome)
All of those will, in all probablility, be awful with the exception of the Nokians.

Personally I'd be fitting Continentals or Goodyear Vectors.
x2 for Nokians

They make very good tyres

Are you sure you want to do that?

An "all season" might be a better bet?
When I had my Hankook winters over the warm late spring I really felt the difference. Very movable when pushing on a touch. Did not inspire confidence at all. Can't comment on the wear rate but I'd have assumed it would have been increased in the warmer temps.

Much happier on summer Vreds now.

Had cheap budget winters on all summer, apart from a little squirming on full boot acceleration on corners they have been fine. All wheel drive X-type 3 litre. FWIW

It also weighs ~ 1.8 tonnes so its VERY well planted...
Word to the wise - it's worth mentioning the Nankangs I had before had no trouble almost sending nigh-on 1.8 tonnes worth of Saab into Armco in wet snow/sleet (in other words, UK winter conditions in the main), so how planted it is has nothing to do with it at times if you hit the wrong patch. Alert driver waiting for the slide and ESP saving it for me... just.

Pneus online seem cheap, Nokian WRD3s £100 a corner (225 50 17) might get 4 new ones ordered before the rush!

Nokian don't seem to do them in 225/60/18. Nor do Vredestein do the Quatrac. In fact there seems to be a limited choice in this size.

There are some full on winter tyres available, but I'm looking at something more all-weather. Any recommendations?

Edit: I've always been a 'premium' tyre type. But browsing, the Hankook W310 seems to get very good reviews. Any experiences on wear rates and handling

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not inclined to change from the factory sizes, but definitely moving towards the Hankooks. Still got plenty of life on my current tyres, but it seems sensible to order four in the summer rather than wait a few months.

Really struggling to find some all seasons in 245/45/17 for my Civic.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what other sizes I can fit instead?

Just as an aside, I noted that my local subaru dealer promotion for the BRZ is a full set of winters with additional alloys to put them on!!

How much value do you place on alloys? I'm keeping mine for when I sell the car, and running steels 2 inches smaller. Choice is now enormous, and cheaper. Handling and ride is better too. Looks a bit CID, but I don't care.

I bought Cooper Weathermaster Snow for my Vectra C last 'winter' Mine were fresh as opposed to 2011. Only 'complaint' was harder ride due to XL rating and being 225/45 (winter size) as opposed to my normal 215/50 summer profile tyres (Uniroyal RS2)

Hi,

I am after some winter tyres for a Mokka 1.4 AWD (well Actually Chevrolet Trax) I am getting a set of steels and wonder what people would recommend from these

Nexen Winguard - £56
Falken Eurowinter HS449 - £65
Kumho Kw23 - £65
Fulda Control Hp - £66
Kumho KC15 4x4 - £68
Yokohama Geolandar G071 4x4 - £69
Avon ice touring -£71
Hankook icebear W310 - £71

To be honest I am not sure if I should be going for the 4x4 tyre of not with the tyre of car.

What would you stick on?

Best regards

Barry

Hi,

We have 215/55/18 Tyres, but was looking at rims from either mytyre or tyreleader with 215/65/16 which I believe will keep the speedo correct to a few MPH

Was going to pain rims silver or find some wheel trims as would rather have steels.

Best regards

Barry

According to the manual these are the tyre sizes Vauxhall recommend.

We all know the implications of straying from these regards warranty.

· All weather 215/55/R18 on a 18" x 7" Five spoke alloy standard on SE, Exclusiv & Tech Line

· All weather 205/70/R16 on a 16" x 6½" 5-hole steel wheel standard on S

· All weather 125/70/R16 on a 16" x 4" Space Saver wheel standard on all models

· Winter only a 195/70/R16 on a 16" x 6½" wheel can be used on all models

Wouldn't bother me to be honest. Just need to find out if 15inch steels will fit over my brakes.

2008 Octavia Vrs with 18'' alloys
Tyres need changing soon so I'm tempted to get smaller steel wheels & winters as it's that time coming up.
Any recommendations for a compatable wheel/tyre combo please?
Hopefully will reduce tyre roar which comes as standard...

16" minimum to fit over the brakes on the vRS. I went for a steel wheel and 205/55/16 Avon Ice Touring ST combo from Mytyres. The Ice Tourings were ok but the rear end felt a little squirrely for the first hundred or so miles until they bedded in. Replaced 2 of them with WinterContact TS850s last year and they're very good, I'll be replacing the remaining two Avons with them next summer.
